Chapter 6 - The Statement Against Grant

Grant did not defend himself immediately.

That frightened Lily more than denial would have.

She moved behind me.

The reaction struck him visibly.

“I did not hurt your mother.”

Lily watched his face.

Grant looked at the nurse.

“Who recorded the statement?”

“Dr. Kessler.”

“Where is it?”

“In the surgical archive.”

Victor used the nurse’s card to open the elevator.

The surgical wing occupied the lowest level of the clinic. Unlike the warm lodge above, it felt like a private hospital.

White walls.

Steel doors.

No windows.

Grant walked ahead of us with his hands visible, as though proving to Lily he carried no weapon.

Victor’s team searched each room.

One contained restraints attached to a medical bed.

Another held boxes of files prepared for destruction.

I found Olivia’s admission report.

The first page described extensive burns, head trauma, and temporary disorientation. The patient had no identification when she arrived.

Yet beneath that statement was a property inventory.

Wedding ring.

Silver locket.

Callahan Industrial identification card.

Renata knew exactly who Olivia was.

The report included the transcript of her first recorded words.

Grant did this.

He knows about the foundation.

Do not let him take Lily.

Grant read the page.

His face became gray.

“I was not near the mountain that night.”

Victor confirmed it.

Grant had been delivering a speech in Washington. Hundreds of witnesses and live footage proved his location.

“He could have ordered it,” the nurse said quietly.

Grant looked at her.

“That is what Renata wanted Olivia to believe.”

“How?”

I examined the medication records.

Olivia had been heavily sedated before making the statement. One drug could cause confusion and memory distortion.

Dr. Kessler administered it.

“He questioned her while she was drugged,” I said.

Grant turned the page.

The audio file remained stored in the archive.

Victor connected a tablet.

Olivia’s voice came through weak and broken.

“Grant did this.”

Kessler asked, “Did Grant order the driver to follow you?”

“I heard his voice.”

“Where?”

“Phone.”

“Did he threaten Lily?”

A long silence followed.

Then Olivia said, “Renata.”

Kessler repeated the question.

“Did Grant threaten Lily?”

“No. Renata was there.”

The written transcript ended before that sentence.

Someone had altered it.

The recording continued.

Olivia whispered, “Grant does not know.”

Kessler stopped the file.

Grant closed his eyes.

The nurse covered her mouth.

“I never heard the complete recording.”

Lily stepped from behind me.

She walked toward her father and placed her small hand inside his.

He sank to his knees and held her against him.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then the archive computer displayed a new message.

Remote deletion in progress.

Victor disconnected the network cable.

The files continued disappearing.

Someone inside the clinic was erasing them locally.

We followed the access signal toward the surgical theater.

Through a glass panel, I saw Renata standing beside Dr. Kessler.

Olivia lay unconscious on a transport bed.

Her face was partly covered with bandages, but the shape of her mouth and cheekbones matched the photographs throughout the Callahan estate.

Grant tried the door.

Locked.

Renata looked through the glass.

She held up a syringe.

Grant struck the door with his shoulder.

“What are you giving her?”

Kessler moved toward the bed.

Renata activated the intercom.

“A medication that will prevent another painful reunion.”

Lily began crying.

Grant hit the glass again.

It did not break.

Renata watched him with a strange sadness.

“You truly loved her, didn’t you?”

“You knew that.”

“I knew she would always be more important.”

“So you tried to kill her.”

Renata’s eyes hardened.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“What?”

“The Callahan Foundation. The board. Your father’s legacy.”

“My father is dead.”

“His crimes are not.”

Grant stopped.

Renata continued.

“Olivia discovered the foundation was created with money your father stole from pension funds. She planned to expose it. The board ordered her stopped.”

“Which board members?”

“Open the door and perhaps I will tell you.”

“You are inside the locked room.”

She smiled.

“Not for long.”

Behind the surgical bed, a freight elevator opened.

Two men wearing medical uniforms entered with a transport crate.

Victor recognized one.

“He works for Callahan security.”

Grant looked at him.

The man had guarded Lily’s bedroom after Olivia’s death.

The conspiracy had never been limited to Renata and Kessler.

It existed inside Grant’s company, his security team, and his home.

Renata pushed Olivia toward the freight elevator.

Lily pressed both hands against the glass.

“Mommy!”

Olivia’s eyes opened.

Slowly, painfully, she turned her head.

Her gaze found Lily.

Her lips moved.

“Run.”

At the same moment, the surgical wing ventilation system began releasing white gas.

Continue to the next part: Olivia wakes long enough to warn Lily as Renata floods the clinic with gas and begins moving her through a hidden exit.
