Chapter 5 - Celeste’s First Lie

Celeste arrived at the interview room wearing borrowed clothes and no jewelry.
Her elegance had vanished.
But her composure had not.
Jonathan watched through one-way glass.
Maya stood beside him.
Detectives questioned Celeste about the hidden room.
She admitted knowing it existed.
She admitted bringing Noah food.
She admitted giving him medication.
But she denied placing him there.
“Who did?”
Celeste looked directly toward the camera.
“Jonathan.”
Maya felt Jonathan tense.
The detective remained calm.
“You’re saying Noah’s father confined him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Noah found information Jonathan had spent years hiding.”
Jonathan whispered, “She’s lying.”
Maya did not answer.
The detective asked, “Why would Jonathan forge his own signature?”
“He didn’t.”
Celeste claimed the treatment authorization was genuine.
Jonathan had signed a master consent form months earlier allowing medical decisions for Noah.
She had adapted it.
“That is still forgery,” the detective said.
Celeste gave a slight smile.
“Then charge me with paperwork.”
The detective stared at her.
“You drugged an eleven-year-old.”
“I administered medication under Dr. Cole’s guidance.”
“Medication prescribed to Jonathan.”
“Only temporarily.”
“What exactly were you treating?”
Celeste paused.
“Panic.”
Noah had described weakness, coldness and inability to move.
The detective leaned forward.
“And locking him inside a wall treated panic?”
Celeste looked away.
That was the first visible crack.
Jonathan spoke through clenched teeth.
“She’s protecting Cole.”
Maya studied him.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“She came back voluntarily.”
“To tell lies.”
“People usually run because they’re afraid of being caught.”
Maya looked at Celeste through the glass.
“Sometimes they come back because they’re more afraid of whoever they ran from.”
Jonathan stared at her.
The detective asked Celeste about Evelyn.
Her reaction was immediate.
A blink.
A tightening around the mouth.
Then calm.
“I knew her professionally.”
Jonathan stepped closer to the glass.
“You told me you met her once at a fundraiser.”
Celeste continued.
“We served on overlapping charity committees.”
The detective placed the hospital photograph on the table.
Celeste stood outside St. Catherine’s beside Dr. Cole.
The date was two months before Evelyn died.
“What were you doing there?”
“Visiting a donor.”
“Which donor?”
“I don’t remember.”
The detective smiled without warmth.
“Convenient.”
Celeste said nothing.
Then he placed another photograph beside it.
This one had been recovered from Dr. Cole’s clinic that morning.
Evelyn stood in the background.
Celeste and Cole were watching her.
Jonathan put one hand against the glass.
“What the hell?”
Maya looked at him.
“You never saw Celeste there?”
“Never.”
The detective asked:
“Were you monitoring Evelyn Hawthorne?”
Celeste finally lost some color.
“No.”
“What did she know?”
“Nothing.”
“What did Noah find?”
“I don’t know.”
That was too fast.
The detective leaned closer.
“You locked him in a hidden compartment because he found nothing?”
Celeste’s hands tightened.
“I told you. Jonathan ordered—”
A second detective entered and whispered something.
Then he placed a printed email in front of Celeste.
From Dr. Cole.
To Celeste.
Dated three days before Noah disappeared.
Subject: THE BOY SAW THE FILE.
One sentence beneath it:
If Jonathan learns what his wife discovered, everything ends.
Jonathan stepped backward.
Maya’s pulse quickened.
Celeste stared at the email.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
The detective asked:
“What ends?”
Celeste said nothing.
Then Maya’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She ignored it.
It rang again.
A text arrived.
YOU SAVED THE WRONG BOY.
Maya stared at the message.

A second appeared.
ASK JONATHAN WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS OTHER SON.
