Chapter 11 - The Woman Evelyn Chose

Maya did not trust Celeste’s account.

Neither did Jonathan.

So investigators searched Evelyn’s archived emails.

Most personal messages had disappeared after her death.

But one old backup server remained with a former attorney.

A coded email thread survived.

Recipient:

C.

Sender:

E.H.

Maya read the first message.

Samuel is stable.

Do not tell Richard.

A later message:

Jonathan still believes his father. I cannot risk bringing him in until I have proof.

Then:

If anything happens to me, Noah stays with Jonathan. Protect him quietly. Do not become another person controlling his life.

Jonathan stopped reading.

That last sentence cut deeply.

Celeste had done exactly what Evelyn warned her not to do.

Another message:

Never medicate Noah without Jonathan’s knowledge.

Another:

If you ever become afraid enough to hurt him, walk away.

Maya looked toward Jonathan.

“She knew Celeste.”

“Yes.”

“She trusted her once.”

“Yes.”

That made Celeste’s betrayal of Noah worse, not better.

Jonathan requested a copy of every email.

Then they found one written five months before Evelyn’s death.

I found Vale.

Jonathan looked up.

“Martin Vale?”

The message continued.

He says Richard did not order the infant switch.

He says someone else did.

But he will not give me the name without immunity.

The next email:

C, do not contact Vale yourself.

He is dangerous.

Then three weeks later:

You contacted him anyway.

Why?

No reply survived.

Jonathan stared.

“Celeste had contact with Vale.”

Maya nodded.

“And didn’t tell police.”

Celeste was questioned again.

This time she stopped cooperating.

Her attorney ended the interview.

That confirmed at least one thing.

Vale mattered.

Meanwhile, police located Samuel—Simon Hale—at a roadside motel in New Hampshire.

He was alive.

Alone.

No Celeste.

No Cole.

No guardian.

The motel clerk said an older man had dropped him off the previous evening.

Simon carried cash, a prepaid phone and instructions to wait.

Jonathan drove north with investigators.

Maya stayed with Noah.

When Jonathan first saw Simon through the motel-room window, he stopped walking.

The boy sat on the bed reading.

Dark hair.

Long hands.

Evelyn’s eyes.

Jonathan covered his mouth.

He had spent thirteen years mourning a child who was alive.

Simon looked up as officers entered.

He did not panic.

That surprised everyone.

Then Jonathan appeared.

Simon stared.

“You’re Jonathan.”

Not Dad.

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“My mother said you might come someday.”

Jonathan’s knees almost failed.

“Your mother?”

“Evelyn.”

“You knew her?”

Simon nodded.

“She visited me.”

Jonathan felt something inside him break.

“How often?”

“Until she died.”

Evelyn had seen Samuel.

She had known him.

Loved him.

Protected him.

And hidden him from Jonathan.

The grief was impossible to separate from anger.

Simon studied his face.

“You look like Noah.”

Jonathan almost laughed.

“He looks like you too.”

Simon’s expression changed.

“You found him?”

“You knew he was missing?”

“Dr. Cole told me.”

Jonathan sat.

“Why did Cole move you?”

“He said somebody found the old file.”

“Who?”

Simon hesitated.

“He called him Vale.”

Jonathan leaned closer.

“Did you ever meet Martin Vale?”

Simon nodded.

“Yesterday.”

Jonathan’s entire body tensed.

“What did he want?”

Simon reached under the motel mattress.

He pulled out a black folder.

The same one Noah had found.

“Mom told me if Vale ever came back, I should make sure you saw this.”

Jonathan took it.

Inside was one page Celeste had been desperate to find.

A signed clinical order.

AUTHORIZATION FOR EMERGENCY PROTOCOL N-14.

The signature at the bottom did not belong to Richard Hawthorne.

May you like

It belonged to someone Jonathan knew even better.

His own.
