Chapter 21 - The Second Signature
This time Jonathan refused to assume forgery.
“Find the original.”
Investigators did.
A faxed medication instruction carried his electronic approval.
Jonathan remembered the day.
Evelyn had been suffering dangerous side effects.
Her specialist called.
They discussed reducing one medication temporarily.
Jonathan had agreed.
The reduction itself was medically reasonable.
The problem came later.
The dose was never restored.
Jonathan had assumed doctors handled it.
Doctors assumed the family had requested continuation.
A communication failure.
Possibly negligence.
No evidence of deliberate sabotage.
Jonathan sat alone after learning the conclusion.
For years he had wanted someone to blame for Evelyn’s rapid decline.
Lorraine.
Cole.
Celeste.
His father.
Anyone.
Instead, the answer was more ordinary.
Evelyn was severely ill.
Her treatment was complicated.
Mistakes happened.
Manipulation of her psychiatric reputation was real.
Evidence of intentionally causing her death was not.
Maya found him outside.
“So nobody murdered her.”
“Not that we can prove.”
“You sound disappointed.”
He looked ashamed.
“I am.”
“Why?”
“Because murder would make it cleaner.”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
“If someone killed her, I could hate them.”
“You can still hate what people did.”
“It isn’t the same.”
“No.”
Jonathan looked toward the lawn.
“I wanted a villain big enough to explain everything.”
Maya sat beside him.
“And?”
“There were several villains.”
“Several victims too.”
“And people who were both.”
Maya looked toward the house.
“Now you’re getting annoying.”
He smiled.
Lorraine was eventually convicted of multiple offenses related to research fraud, obstruction, coercion and falsification.
The prosecution did not charge her with homicide.
Anna cried when the verdict came.
Not because it was enough.
Because someone finally said publicly that what happened had been real.
Celeste pleaded guilty before trial.
Unlawful confinement.
Child endangerment.
Medication-related assault.
Forgery.
Conspiracy.
Obstruction.
She received a substantial prison sentence despite cooperation.
During sentencing, her attorney described lifelong psychological control by Lorraine.
The judge acknowledged it.
Then said:
“Trauma may explain why a person perceives fewer choices. It does not erase the choices they make when another child becomes the person paying the price.”
Maya thought the sentence should be written on the wall of every powerful family.
Celeste requested one final opportunity to address Noah through a statement.
Noah chose not to attend.
Jonathan received a sealed copy.
He did not open it.
“It’s Noah’s.”
Maya nodded.
Good.
Samuel’s legal identity was corrected.
He chose:
Simon Samuel Hale Hawthorne.
Not erasing one life for another.
Anna met him twice.
Carefully.
No expectations.
She told him about the baby she had lost.
He listened.
Then asked:
“Did you ever hate me because I lived?”
Anna began crying.
“No.”
Simon looked uncertain.
She continued.
“I hated what happened around you.”
“That’s different.”
“Yes.”
