Chapter 6 - The Locket

The gold locket became evidence of something much smaller than the conspiracy I had imagined.

But it mattered because it proved how easily Victoria lied.

After the shareholder vote, Mercer Heritage’s outside counsel issued a litigation hold over records connected to the folio incident because the audit was expanding.

The estate manager, Howard Bell, had preserved the wedding-suite linens after I asked him Sunday morning not to discard anything until I decided what to do.

He had not known why.

The sheet remained bagged in laundry room.

The folio was mine.

I photographed damage.

A private forensic lab, later retained by company counsel, compared residue.

The reddish stain contained:

Victoria’s blood.

Burgundy security dye from the Mercer Heritage packet.

No other biological material.

The opening scandal was exactly what Julian said later.

Victoria pried the security folio clasp.

Cut palm.

Security dye transferred.

Sat on bed while wrapping hand.

Locket chain snagged and broke.

She crawled under blanket later.

No sexual betrayal.

That part was innocent in the narrowest possible sense.

Everything surrounding it was not.

Security camera from upstairs hallway showed timeline.

1:14 a.m.

I went downstairs carrying pillow.

1:22.

Julian entered hallway, looked toward stairs.

1:24.

Victoria walked into suite carrying a small manicure/tool pouch.

1:27.

Julian returned.

1:41.

Both inside.

2:06.

Victoria emerged briefly holding tissue around hand, then went back.

2:19.

Julian opened door, argued silently.

2:23.

Closed.

No one else.

That contradicted her “I slept immediately” story.

Then Howard remembered.

Around 12:50, Victoria asked him:

“Did Catherine give Elena David’s old case?”

He said yes.

So she had been watching.

Then why did she search?

She believed Dad’s physical shareholder certificate could be used to verify my share block for proxy paperwork.

Outdated.

The original certificate had been canceled when shares moved to trust.

She did not understand modern custody records.

She had invaded privacy for useless paper.

That almost made it worse.

Then Julian gave formal statement to audit committee.

“I told my mother where folio was.”

“Why?”

“She said David’s original documents would help Norman prepare proxy.”

“Did Elena authorize?”

“No.”

“Did you believe she would?”

“I believed she would after marriage.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to.”

There.

Then:

“Did you know Victoria intended to search without permission?”

“Yes.”

“Did you assist opening?”

“No.”

“Did you stop?”

“No.”

“Did you know security envelope private?”

“Yes.”

“Did you later pretend sleep?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Cowardice.”

That word was his.

No lawyer made him use.

Then I attended one couples counseling session.

Only one more.

Therapist asked:

“What would repair require?”

I answered:

“I would have to believe he sees my no as complete sentence.”

Julian looked.

“I do now.”

I asked:

“Would you if I hadn’t left?”

He could not answer.

That was enough.

After session, I removed wedding ring.

I placed in envelope.

Not threw.

Not smashed.

I had loved him.

The ring did not become evil because marriage failed.

I filed for legal separation first, then divorce after more evidence.

No dramatic impulse.

I needed certainty.

Then Victoria launched her own version.

To family:

Elena had walked into room, made “disgusting accusations,” then used misunderstanding to seize company.

False.

To employees:

A minority shareholder was “weaponizing personal conflict.”

To cousins:

I had always wanted Mercer wealth.

That one was funny.

My father’s shares were worth more than whatever marital property I could claim.

Still, gossip works by repetition.

I said nothing publicly.

Then employee trust received anonymous packet accusing me of planning to sell hotels.

No evidence.

Metadata traced print job to Mercer estate office printer.

Again Victoria’s household.

Could be staff.

But pattern.

Then one email crossed line.

Victoria wrote to NorthBridge executive:

Elena Marlowe is emotionally unstable following marital breakdown and should not be considered reliable counterparty.

NorthBridge counsel forwarded to Mercer Heritage general counsel.

I was not counterparty.

I had no guarantee.

It was reputational attack.

Company board censured Victoria and removed her as chair by director vote pending shareholder ratification.

She remained director temporarily due share rights.

Independent Maria Torres became interim chair.

Victoria’s power narrowed.

Not because I demanded.

Because her conduct during a refinancing scared lender.

Then audit found altered board minutes.

And that moved everything from ugly family governance toward criminal territory.
