Chap 4

Andrew drove through the city like a man fleeing a nightmare.

His luxury sedan tore through empty streets as his phone continued vibrating without pause.

Twenty-three missed calls.

Thirty-one emails marked URGENT.

Twelve text messages from board members demanding an emergency meeting.

None of them offered reassurance.

Every one of them carried the same message.

Something had gone terribly wrong.

Less than twenty minutes later, Andrew stormed into the glass headquarters of Harrington Group.

Despite the late hour, every floor was brightly lit.

Employees were still inside.

Not because they were working.

Because no one was allowed to leave.

Lawyers occupied the conference rooms.

Financial analysts stared at giant monitors displaying collapsing stock prices.

Security guards stood outside the executive offices.

The atmosphere felt less like a corporation...

And more like a ship taking on water.

The moment Andrew stepped through the lobby, conversations stopped.

No one greeted him.

No one smiled.

His assistant, Melissa, hurried toward him with tears in her eyes.

"Mr. Harrington..."

"We have a serious problem."

Andrew slammed his briefcase onto the reception desk.

"I already know there's a problem!"

"I want solutions!"

Melissa swallowed nervously.

"There... aren't any."

Andrew pushed past her and entered the executive boardroom.

Every director was already seated around the long mahogany table.

Usually, they stood when he entered.

Tonight...

No one moved.

The chairman slowly folded his hands.

"Andrew."

"You finally made it."

Andrew looked around the room.

"What happened?"

The Chief Financial Officer slid a thick folder across the table.

"Our cash reserves are frozen."

"Our international credit lines have been terminated."

"Six investment funds withdrew within the same hour."

"Three banks demanded immediate repayment."

He paused before delivering the final blow.

"We no longer have enough liquidity to open the markets tomorrow."

Andrew stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"We're worth billions."

The CFO nodded sadly.

"We were."

Another director activated the large screen.

A flowchart filled the room.

Hundreds of companies.

Investment firms.

Holding corporations.

International banks.

Every line eventually connected to one name.

VESELOVA INTERNATIONAL

Andrew frowned.

"What is this?"

The director answered quietly.

"The real source of our capital."

Andrew laughed.

"No."

"I built this company."

The room remained silent.

The chairman finally spoke.

"No, Andrew."

"You expanded it."

"But the money..."

"...was never yours."

He pressed another button.

A confidential financing agreement appeared on the screen.

Signed three years earlier.

Andrew's signature sat at the bottom.

He stared at it in disbelief.

"I've never seen this."

"You signed it during the acquisition of Eastbridge Holdings."

"You never read the attached schedules."

Andrew flipped through the pages with shaking hands.

Buried deep within the agreement...

One clause stood out.

The guarantor reserves the right to withdraw all financial support in the event of fraud, coercion, domestic abuse, or conduct that brings reputational damage to the Veselov family.

His heart stopped.

Domestic abuse.

He looked up slowly.

"No..."

The boardroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Two women entered first.

Then four attorneys.

Then several members of an international legal team.

Finally...

A familiar figure walked into the room.

Elena.

Gone was the bruised woman carrying a worn leather bag.

Tonight she wore an elegant navy suit tailored to perfection.

The bruise beneath her eye remained.

She hadn't hidden it.

She wanted everyone to see exactly what Andrew had done.

The room rose to its feet.

Not for Andrew.

For her.

Even the chairman stepped forward respectfully.

"Ms. Veselova."

"Welcome."

Andrew could barely speak.

"Elena..."

"You planned this?"

She looked at him calmly.

"No."

"You planned it."

"I simply refused to stop you."

He took a desperate step forward.

"I can explain."

She raised one hand.

He fell silent.

For three years...

He had interrupted her.

Tonight...

He would listen.

"I married you because I believed you loved me."

"I hid my family's name because I wanted to know who you really were."

She glanced around the boardroom.

"Now I know."

Her voice remained steady.

"You didn't fall because I took your company."

"You fell because you built your future on greed, violence, and the belief that no one would ever hold you accountable."

The room was completely silent.

Andrew's knees weakened.

"Please..."

"I'll change."

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

Then quietly removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the polished conference table.

The soft metallic sound echoed through the room.

"You had three years to change."

"You chose power instead."

She turned toward the chairman.

"My attorneys have completed the acquisition."

The chairman nodded.

"The Board has unanimously voted."

He looked directly at Andrew.

"You are removed as Chief Executive Officer."

Security officers stepped toward Andrew.

Not aggressively.

Professionally.

The same way they would escort any dismissed employee.

Andrew looked around desperately.

Every person who once depended on him avoided his eyes.

He finally understood.

Power borrowed through fear disappears the moment fear is gone.

As the security officers escorted him toward the door, Elena spoke one final sentence.

"Do you remember what you told me outside the mansion?"

Andrew closed his eyes.

She repeated his own words.

"Get on your knees... and get out."

She shook her head gently.

"I won't ask you to kneel."

"I'll simply ask you to leave."

Andrew walked out of the boardroom without another word.

For the first time in his life...

May you like

He wasn't leaving as a billionaire.

He was leaving as a man who had lost everything.
