Chap 3

Back at the Harrington Estate, the gala continued as if nothing had happened.
Guests laughed nervously.
The orchestra resumed playing.
Andrew stood near the grand staircase, pretending Elena's dramatic exit meant nothing.
"She's emotional," he told a group of investors.
"The divorce has been difficult for her."
Eleanor nodded sympathetically.
"Poor girl never learned how to handle pressure."
Several guests smiled politely.
Then Andrew's phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
He ignored it.
The phone rang again.
And again.
Finally, irritated, he answered.
"What?"
The voice on the other end was panicked.
"Andrew, where are you?"
"At the gala."
"You need to leave immediately."
"Why?"
"Our primary credit facility has been suspended."
Andrew frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"The banks just froze everything."
"That’s impossible."
"I’m looking at the notice right now!"
"All financing guarantees have been withdrawn."
"Andrew… they’re calling in the loans."
The color drained from his face.
"Who withdrew the guarantees?"
A long silence.
Then one name.
"Veselova International."
Andrew’s hand tightened around the phone.
Around him, the music continued.
People laughed.
Champagne glasses clinked.
Yet suddenly it felt as if the floor beneath him had vanished.
"That can’t be right."
"It is."
"And there’s more."
"Every acquisition scheduled for next quarter has been suspended."
"The board is demanding an emergency meeting."
"Our stock is already down eighteen percent in after-hours trading."
"Andrew… what did you do?"
The call ended.
For the first time in years, Andrew felt genuine fear.
Eleanor noticed immediately.
"What happened?"
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he pulled out his phone and searched for Veselova International.
A flood of articles appeared.
Veselova International — one of the largest private investment groups in Europe.
Estimated family wealth: $38.4 billion.
Founder: Ivan Veselov.
Only heir: Elena Ivanovna Veselova.
Andrew stared at the screen.
Elena… Veselova.
The name hit him like a punch to the chest.
He remembered every time she avoided discussing her family.
Every time she insisted on living modestly.
Every time she said, "I don’t care about money."
He had assumed she meant she didn’t have any.
Now he realized the truth.
She had been hiding a fortune larger than his entire empire.
"No."
"No, no, no…"
Eleanor grabbed the phone.
Her expression froze as she read the article.
"This is fake."
"It has to be fake."
But deep down, she already knew it wasn’t.
Pieces of the past suddenly made sense.
The expensive education.
The fluent languages.
The way powerful people occasionally seemed to recognize Elena.
The confidence she displayed even when humiliated.
She had never been trapped.
She had been watching.
A loud notification echoed through the ballroom.
Then another.
Dozens of phones lit up simultaneously.
Guests began reading headlines.

Whispers spread rapidly through the crowd.
"Veselova?"
"As in the Veselov family?"
"His wife was the heir?"
"My God…"
People began stepping away from Andrew.
Investors who had been smiling minutes earlier suddenly looked elsewhere.
Business partners quietly excused themselves.
Even the photographers turned their cameras away.
Andrew looked toward the mansion gates.
The black SUV was long gone.
And for the first time, he understood what Elena had meant.
"Remember that sentence, Andrew. You are going to hear it again."
A cold realization spread through him.
