Chapter 9 - The Will Beneath the Burn Scar

Room Zero contained genetic testing records from the night of the fire.
Cross had collected blood from Eli and Dante while both were unconscious.
The files referred to them as Subject B and Subject R.
Their blood contained a rare inherited marker associated with a medical treatment Owen’s company had been developing.
The treatment could help repair certain forms of nerve damage.
Brooks Medical Logistics did not own only transportation contracts.
It held the unpublished research of Madeline’s mother, Dr. Julia Brooks.
Julia died when Madeline was nine.
At least that was what the family believed.
Her research disappeared after her death.
Owen later discovered Cross had continued testing it on patients without approval.
The warehouse at Pier Forty Two stored the original laboratory records.
Vincent ordered the records burned because he believed Cross planned to use them against Romano companies.
Cross filled the warehouse with witnesses and children to turn the fire into a massacre.
The two boys survived because both had received an early version of Julia’s treatment after childhood injuries.
Their blood contained evidence that the therapy worked.
Madeline looked at Owen.
“You allowed Mom’s treatment to be used on Eli?”
“He had a spinal infection when he was seven. She believed it would save him.”
“And Dante?”
Vincent answered.
“My wife asked Julia to help him after an accident.”
The Brooks and Romano families had been connected long before the fire.
Madeline’s mother treated Vincent’s son in secret.
Owen handled medical contracts linked to Romano shipping.
Vincent funded the laboratory.
Cross wanted the research.
Every person had hidden pieces of the truth until secrecy became more dangerous than the crime itself.
Naomi opened Owen’s original will.
The medical patents belonged equally to Madeline and Eli.
The Romano family had no legal ownership.
But Vincent controlled manufacturing facilities built with Brooks money.
Eli could close them.
Vincent could block distribution.
Millions of patients could lose future access to the treatment if the families turned the discovery into another war.
Dante, the real son, listened from his hospital bed.
“You raised him to inherit your empire.”
Vincent remained beside the door.
“Yes.”
“What was I supposed to inherit?”
“Everything.”
“You thought I was dead.”
“Yes.”
“And when you discovered he was Eli?”
Vincent looked toward Owen.
“I did not discover the full truth until five years later.”
“You still kept him.”
“Yes.”
The real Dante laughed bitterly.
“Because you loved him?”
Vincent answered after a long silence.
“Yes.”
Eli stood.
“You used me.”
“I also loved you.”
“Both can be true.”
Vincent accepted that.
Madeline examined the trust dashboard.
Every Romano medical account remained frozen except one.
A transfer continued moving funds from a private investment reserve into a new company called Brooks Restoration.
The account owner was Madeline.
She had never created it.
Vincent looked at the transaction.
“That was not me.”
Owen raised one hand.
“I created it.”
The account contained every dollar Vincent’s companies had earned from Julia’s research.
Owen had redirected the profits for twelve years.
The total exceeded six hundred million dollars.
Madeline stared at her father.
“You stole from him.”
“I recovered what belonged to your mother.”
“You did it in my name.”
“To keep it beyond Cross’s reach.”
“You made me the owner of money tied to organized crime.”
“I intended to explain.”
“When?”
Owen had no answer.
Federal investigators entered with a warrant freezing the account.
The money could not move until a court determined whether it belonged to Brooks Medical Logistics, the Romano companies, or victims treated inside Room Zero.
Eli looked at Madeline.
“We found each other and inherited a war.”
Before she could answer, Noah called from his bed.
The old music player had activated.
A final file appeared after both siblings signed the trust.
Julia Brooks appeared on the damaged screen.
She was alive in a recent recording.
“If Madeline and Eli are watching this, Owen has finally admitted only half the truth.”
Owen went pale.
Julia continued.
“One of the boys from Pier Forty Two is my biological son.”
Madeline looked from Eli to the real Dante.
Her mother’s voice became quieter.
May you like
“And it is not Eli.”
Continue to the next part: Madeline discovers her mother may have survived and that the real Dante Romano is connected to the Brooks family by blood.
