Chapter 10 - The Patient in Room Zero

Julia Brooks’s recording had been made nine days earlier.

She sat inside a room with white walls and no windows.

A hospital bracelet circled her wrist.

The name printed on it was Patient Zero.

Madeline leaned closer to the screen.

Her mother had aged, but the voice and eyes were unmistakable.

“Owen told our children I died because Cross threatened to take them,” Julia said.

Madeline looked at her father.

“You let us bury her.”

Owen closed his eyes.

“Cross had her.”

“For twenty two years?”

“I searched.”

“You worked beside Vincent, built accounts, and collected evidence, but you did not tell me my mother might be alive.”

“I believed knowing would make you a target.”

Madeline laughed through tears.

“Everyone keeps destroying my life to protect me.”

Julia continued on the recording.

“Before I married Owen, I worked with Vincent Romano. We were young, frightened, and careless.”

Vincent stood perfectly still.

The real Dante watched him.

Julia’s voice trembled.

“I became pregnant.”

Madeline understood before the recording said it.

“The child was born during a medical conference in Montreal. Vincent believed the baby died.”

Vincent stepped toward the screen.

“No.”

“Owen helped me hide the truth because Cross had already begun collecting children connected to the research.”

The real Dante’s face lost all color.

Julia looked directly into the camera.

“Dante Romano is my son.”

Silence filled the hospital room.

Madeline looked at the young man behind the glass.

He was not only Vincent’s biological child.

He was her half brother.

Eli stared at Owen.

“You raised another man’s son while Vincent raised yours.”

Owen looked broken.

“I was trying to keep both boys alive.”

“You exchanged us.”

“No.”

Owen explained that Cross controlled the identification after the warehouse fire. Vincent unknowingly took Eli. Cross kept Dante.

Owen discovered the truth years later but feared that revealing it would cause Vincent to search Room Zero and provoke Cross into killing everyone hidden there.

“You chose patience,” Madeline said.

“I chose survival.”

“You chose for all of us.”

Federal agents traced Julia’s recording.

It originated from a private rehabilitation facility outside Providence.

A tactical team was sent immediately.

The facility was empty.

One bed remained warm.

A silver hospital bracelet lay on the pillow.

Beside it was a note written in Julia’s handwriting.

Maddie, do not let Vincent reach Patient Zero before you do.

Vincent read the message.

“She is afraid of me.”

“Shouldn’t she be?” Eli asked.

Vincent did not answer.

The real Dante requested that Vincent leave his room.

Vincent obeyed.

For the first time in decades, the feared leader of the Romano family stood in a hospital hallway with nowhere he was welcome.

Madeline returned to Noah’s room.

The teenager was awake and eating ice chips while Hannah slept beside him.

“You saved us,” Madeline said.

Noah shook his head.

“My mom did.”

“You carried the evidence.”

“I was terrified.”

“You still carried it.”

Dante Romano had entered the hospital believing fear belonged only to weaker people.

Noah reminded Madeline that courage often looked like a frightened child protecting something adults wanted destroyed.

An alert appeared on the trust dashboard.

The frozen Brooks Restoration account had received a new ownership claim.

The claimant was Julia Brooks.

Her live biometric identity had been verified less than five minutes earlier inside Massachusetts General Hospital.

Madeline looked toward the security cameras.

Her mother was inside the building.

Hospital doors began locking floor by floor.

A message appeared on every screen.

PATIENT ZERO TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.

Dr. Carter checked the patient system.

A private elevator was moving from the old basement toward the trauma wing.

It carried one patient.

No staff member had requested the transfer.

Madeline, Eli, Vincent, and the real Dante gathered in the hallway as the elevator approached.

The doors opened.

A hospital bed rolled out automatically.

A woman lay beneath a white sheet.

Her face was hidden.

A sealed financial folder rested on her chest.

Madeline stepped closer.

The folder carried the Brooks family seal and the Romano crest.

Inside was a new will signed by Julia Brooks.

It transferred the six hundred million dollar research account to one person.

Noah Kessler.

Hannah woke and stared at her son.

“That is impossible.”

The woman beneath the sheet moved.

Madeline pulled the fabric back.

It was not Julia.

Malcolm Cross lay on the bed.

Blood covered his hospital gown even though federal officers had taken him away less than an hour earlier.

His eyes opened.

“Julia says thank you for finding both boys.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Where is she?”

Cross smiled weakly.

“She is taking back the company you built with her research.”

Every Romano medical account began transferring into Brooks Restoration.

Vincent’s phone filled with emergency alerts.

Eli looked at the ownership list.

The new controlling shareholder was not Julia.

It was Dante Brooks.

The name combined the identities of both men who survived the fire.

The real Dante stared at Eli.

Eli stared back.

Neither had authorized it.

Cross’s smile widened.

“You still believe there were only two boys at Pier Forty Two.”

The lights in the trauma hallway failed.

A fire alarm began sounding from the old basement.

When emergency power returned, the elevator was empty.

Cross had disappeared from the bed.

So had Noah.

Only the old silver music player remained on the floor.

Its speaker activated.

Julia Brooks’s voice filled the silent hospital.

“Madeline, bring Vincent and both of your brothers to Pier Forty Two.”

A child began crying in the background.

Then Julia whispered one final sentence.

May you like

“I kept the third survivor hidden long enough.”

Continue to the next part: Madeline must return to the burned warehouse where her family was divided and discover why Noah now controls both the Brooks research fortune and the Romano medical empire.
