Chapter 8 - The Night the Trauma Wing Became a Fortress

Vincent stared at the restrained young man.

His name was Dante Romano.

The real Dante.

He had been thirteen on the night of the warehouse fire.

Vincent believed his body had been identified through dental records.

Cross had falsified the match.

The remains belonged to another child.

“You left me here,” Dante said.

Vincent stepped forward.

Cross pushed the syringe closer to Hannah’s throat.

“One more step.”

The real Dante looked thinner than Eli, with hollow cheeks and a tremor in his hands. Years of medication had weakened him, but his eyes carried the same cold focus as Vincent’s.

Vincent’s voice broke.

“I thought you were dead.”

“You replaced me.”

“No.”

“You gave him my name, my home, and my father.”

Eli stepped away from Vincent.

The accusation was not his fault, yet he carried the life taken from another boy.

Cross smiled.

“Two wounded children. One grieving criminal. It was remarkably easy.”

After the fire, Cross discovered both boys alive.

Eli suffered memory loss.

Dante suffered severe burns and lung damage.

Cross allowed Vincent to find Eli wearing Dante’s identification bracelet.

He kept the real Dante hidden as leverage.

Vincent used the wrong boy’s survival to protect his empire.

Cross used the real boy’s disappearance to control Vincent from the shadows.

“Why keep him alive?” Madeline asked.

“Vincent’s family trust required a biological heir.”

Cross looked toward Eli.

“Brooks Medical Logistics required a different one.”

With both men’s blood, he could control two companies worth hundreds of millions.

The car crash that brought Noah to the hospital had interrupted the final transfer.

Hannah had placed Owen’s evidence inside her son and sent him toward Madeline.

Cross ordered the crash.

Dante’s violent arrival at the ER had not caused the crisis.

It had forced every hidden player into the same building.

Security alarms sounded.

Boston police and federal agents had entered the hospital basement through the service tunnels.

Cross’s expression tightened.

He pressed the syringe into Hannah’s neck.

Madeline moved before anyone else.

She threw a metal tray across the room.

Cross turned.

Eli struck him against the laboratory door.

The syringe fell.

Carmine pulled Hannah away while Hugo restrained Cross.

The real Dante collapsed inside the medical chair.

Vincent caught him.

The young man flinched from his father’s touch.

“Do not call me son.”

Vincent froze.

Eli understood the words better than anyone.

Upstairs, the trauma wing became a secured evidence site.

Noah woke with Hannah beside him.

Owen was moved into intensive care.

The real Dante required treatment for years of medication exposure and untreated injuries.

Madeline returned to nursing because there were still patients who needed her.

Eli sat beside the wall in his torn white shirt.

The cut above his eyebrow had stopped bleeding.

“You still need stitches,” Madeline said.

“I can wait my turn.”

The words carried enough shame to sound like an apology.

Madeline cleaned the wound herself.

“You became a terrible person.”

He almost smiled.

“You always were direct.”

“I am not saying you cannot become something else.”

He looked toward Vincent sitting outside the real Dante’s room.

“I do not know what I am.”

“You are Eli Brooks.”

“I remember almost none of him.”

“Then you decide who he becomes next.”

Naomi Pierce, Owen’s attorney, arrived carrying financial documents recovered from Room Zero.

The Brooks trust had activated on Eli’s twenty fifth birthday.

But Cross had prepared an emergency seizure order.

Unless Eli revoked it before midnight, control would transfer into a hospital foundation account.

Eli checked the clock.

Eleven forty seven.

Naomi gave him the authorization tablet.

He entered the childhood rhythm Owen had used.

The screen accepted it.

Then a second signature appeared.

Madeline Brooks.

She had never signed.

Naomi looked at her.

“The trust requires both siblings.”

Madeline’s banking profile had been copied from the hospital system years earlier.

Cross had used it to create a false consent.

She placed her real fingerprint on the screen.

The forged transfer was revoked.

Every connected hospital account froze.

Cross was escorted through the emergency hallway in handcuffs.

Before passing Madeline, he smiled.

“You think the money was the purpose.”

“What was?”

“The boys.”

He looked toward Eli and the real Dante.

“One of them carries a blood marker worth more than both companies.”

Continue to the next part: The medical files reveal the warehouse fire was arranged to hide an experiment performed on both thirteen year old boys.
