Chapter 8 - THE TRANSFER FROM VALENTINA’S OFFICE

Valentina surrendered her computers, phones, and office access immediately.

Her attorneys objected.

She overruled them.

“If Adeline spent her life being called a liar, I will not ask her to trust my denial without evidence.”

The forensic team traced the transfer to a computer inside Valentina’s private office.

Her access card opened the door at 3:14 in the morning.

Security footage showed a woman entering in a hooded coat.

The face remained hidden.

The woman used Valentina’s fingerprint to unlock the workstation.

“That is impossible,” Valentina said.

The investigator enlarged the image.

The hand pressing the scanner was not attached to the woman.

It was a silicone replica.

Someone had copied Valentina’s print from a champagne glass.

The ballroom staff had collected hundreds of glasses after private events.

Celeste’s security team controlled disposal.

The woman inside the office had been Celeste’s personal assistant, Marianne Cole.

Marianne had served the Marchand family for sixteen years.

She disappeared after Celeste’s arrest.

Police located her at a rental house near the Canadian border.

She agreed to cooperate.

Celeste ordered the transfer.

The ninety million dollars had not been given to Valentina.

It had been placed under her name to make her look responsible if I appeared.

Celeste prepared every possible daughter as the other’s enemy.

If I remained hidden, Valentina inherited the company.

If I returned, financial evidence would make me believe Valentina stole my protected assets.

The sisters would destroy each other while Celeste defended herself as the only person capable of managing the crisis.

Marianne provided more than the transfer records.

She had preserved copies of Celeste’s private voice notes.

One message had been recorded the morning of the birthday.

Adeline has accepted a catering assignment. Valentina must humiliate her publicly before the reveal. The room needs to believe this is revenge, not identity.

I listened twice.

Celeste knew I was coming.

The wine incident had looked spontaneous.

Perhaps the exact glass was.

The cruelty around it had been encouraged.

Marianne explained that Celeste repeatedly warned Valentina about incompetent servers throughout the evening. She said someone from the catering company planned to embarrass the family.

Valentina remembered.

“Mother told me the dark haired waitress had been staring at me.”

Celeste had placed us near each other and waited.

She understood her daughter’s pride.

She understood my need to reveal myself.

She wanted the ballroom to frame everything as a servant seeking revenge against a cruel heiress.

The old photograph changed the story faster than she expected.

Valentina looked toward me.

“She used what I had become.”

“Yes.”

“I still threw the wine.”

“Yes.”

She did not argue.

Marianne revealed another plan.

After midnight, if the trust transfer completed, I was supposed to be arrested for theft.

A diamond bracelet had been placed inside my employee locker.

Hotel security found it after the ballroom evacuation.

Celeste intended to discredit me before any identity claim reached court.

Thomas recognized the strategy.

She had planted drugs inside his son’s car twenty two years earlier.

One method.

Different witnesses.

The recovered voice notes also connected Celeste directly to Lucien’s death.

Miles had already confessed to assisting.

He now admitted pouring the medication into Lucien’s drink.

Celeste ordered it.

Dr. Benton delayed treatment.

All three expected the revised trust to disappear after Lucien died.

They did not know Thomas had hidden the original.

Miles requested a meeting with Valentina before sentencing.

She agreed through secured glass.

He looked older without tailored suits and private cars.

“I am your father,” he said.

“You are the man who helped kill the person who raised me.”

“I loved your mother.”

“That explains the affair.”

“It explains everything.”

“No. It explains what you wanted. Not what you did.”

Miles pressed one hand against the glass.

“I stayed near you your entire life.”

“You watched Mother teach me that love meant winning.”

“I protected you.”

“You helped erase my sister so I could inherit something you planned to control.”

“I wanted you to have the life I could not give you openly.”

“You wanted to own the life Lucien built.”

Miles’s expression hardened.

“You sound like Adeline.”

Valentina looked toward me beyond the observation window.

“Perhaps because she is my sister.”

She left without touching the glass.

Celeste refused to meet either of us.

Instead, she sent a letter through her attorney.

It contained no apology.

She described every choice as protection.

She erased me to protect the marriage.

She lied to Valentina to protect her childhood.

She killed Lucien to protect the company.

She transferred the debt to protect the family legacy.

At the end, she wrote:

One day you will understand that mothers do not have the luxury of innocence.

I read the letter once.

Then returned it to the evidence file.

The criminal trials began eleven months after the birthday.

Celeste faced charges connected to my abduction, Lucien’s death, financial fraud, evidence destruction, and the institutional network.

Miles and Dr. Benton entered cooperation agreements.

Thomas pleaded guilty to forgery and obstruction.

Valentina and I testified on the same day.

Before we entered the courtroom, she touched the half locket at her neck.

“Do you remember what Dad said?”

“Sisters do not have to own the same piece to belong together.”

“Do you believe that?”

“I believe he did.”

She nodded.

“That is enough for today.”

Inside, Celeste watched us take separate seats.

For the first time, she could not place one daughter between herself and the other.

Continue to the next part: Adeline and Valentina testify against the mother who built their childhoods from opposing lies.
