Chapter 5 - THE FATHER WHO SEARCHED FOR ME

Lucien died twelve years after I disappeared.
The public believed a sudden heart attack took him inside his private study.
No autopsy was performed.
Celeste insisted his known cardiac condition made one unnecessary.
The newly recovered medical ledger showed that his heart condition had been mild.
The digitalis prescription did not appear in his ordinary chart.
Dr. Benton had written it under a private patient code.
The same doctor who declared me delusional at age seven.
Police arrested him at his retirement home.
He was eighty one.
He requested an attorney and denied everything until Grant showed him the original ledger.
Then he asked whether Celeste had already blamed him.
She had not.
That frightened him more than accusation.
Benton admitted prescribing the medication but claimed Miles requested it for Lucien’s irregular heartbeat.
Miles blamed Celeste.
Celeste blamed Lucien’s illness.
The investigation no longer depended on any one confession.
Financial records showed Celeste paid Benton four million dollars through a foundation account after Lucien died.
The payment was described as support for child mental health research.
My name appeared beneath the internal project reference.
Even his death had been financed through the lie created around me.
Thomas found another safe deposit box registered to Lucien.
The key had been hidden inside the original trust book.
Inside were letters spanning eighteen years.
Every one was addressed to me.
Adeline,
You are eight today.
Your mother tells me the search has produced nothing.
I do not believe her.
Adeline,
You are twelve today.
A woman at St. Agnes denied knowing your name, then called me back and asked for money.
When I arrived, the records had disappeared.
Adeline,
You are sixteen today.
I have hired another investigator.
Celeste says I am destroying Valentina by refusing to accept your death.
I love her.
I love you.
Neither love requires the other to vanish.
I pressed the letters against my chest.
Lucien had searched.
Not perfectly.
Not successfully.
But he had never accepted the lake story.
Valentina read the copies beside me.
“He wrote to you every birthday.”
“Yes.”
“He never told me.”
“Mother convinced him that searching hurt you.”
“She made me part of the cage around him.”
Valentina’s voice sounded empty.
Celeste used each daughter to control the other.
She told Lucien that his search traumatized Valentina.
She told Valentina that Adeline died saving her.
She told me nobody came because nobody wanted me.
Three lies.
One family divided into obedient pieces.
The final letter had been written two days before Lucien died.
Adeline,
I found Ruth Reed.
She confirmed you survived the lake.
Tomorrow I will confront Celeste and Miles with the evidence.
I have changed the trust.
You will receive controlling authority because you know what it means to live without the Marchand name.
Valentina will remain equally protected financially. She is not responsible for her mother’s deception.
If anything happens to me, Thomas must release everything.
Thomas sat across from us.
He looked twenty years older than he had at the ballroom.
“Why did you not release it?”
“Lucien called me that evening. He said Celeste had agreed to bring Adeline home.”
I stared at him.
“You believed her?”
“I wanted to.”
“After everything?”
“I had already helped create the false records. Admitting the truth would expose me.”
There it was.
Thomas had not remained silent only because Celeste threatened his son.
He protected himself.
Lucien died the next morning.
Celeste told Thomas that Ruth had fabricated everything for money. She showed him a false report claiming I had died inside a foster home.
Thomas closed the safe deposit box and continued serving the family.
“You chose the easier death,” I said.
“Yes.”
He did not ask me to forgive him.
That made his confession more useful than apology.
Lucien’s revised trust gave me fifty one percent voting control of Marchand Hospitality if I were found alive.
Valentina would retain forty nine percent and equal financial benefit.
Celeste had spent years portraying my return as something that would destroy Valentina.
Lucien’s plan protected both of us.
It removed Celeste.
Rebecca Sloan called an emergency board meeting.
Celeste’s attorneys fought the suspension.
Then forensic accountants discovered that she had borrowed one hundred eighty million dollars against the transfer scheduled for Valentina’s birthday.
The loans funded failed private developments controlled by Miles.
If the midnight transfer had completed, the debt would have moved into Valentina’s trust.
Celeste needed me legally dead so the company could absorb her losses.
Valentina looked at the report.
“My birthday was a debt transfer.”
The ballroom, cake, and hundreds of guests had not been only celebration.
They had created public evidence that Valentina accepted control willingly.
Her mother had planned to give her a crown attached to a sinking company.
“What happens now?” Valentina asked.
“The accounts freeze,” Rebecca said. “An independent administrator controls the company until the identity claim is resolved.”
Celeste entered the boardroom with two attorneys.
She looked at me.
“You have taken enough.”
“I had nothing to take until you threw me away.”
“I gave you another life.”
“You gave me another name.”
“You survived.”
“That was not your gift.”
Valentina stood.
“Did you kill Dad?”
Celeste looked toward her.
“Lucien was dying.”
“The doctor says his condition was stable.”
“The doctor is protecting himself.”
“Did you collect the medication?”
“I handled every household prescription.”
“Did you give it to him?”
Celeste’s expression remained still.
Then her eyes moved toward Miles behind the glass interview wall.
He had begun speaking to prosecutors.
For the first time, fear entered her face.
Rebecca’s phone vibrated.
Miles had confessed.
He said Celeste ordered the fatal dose.
He also said he had recorded their final argument with Lucien.
The audio was stored on a private server inside the hotel.
The same hotel ballroom where Valentina had thrown wine in my face.

Before investigators reached the server room, the building’s fire alarms activated.
Continue to the next part: Someone sets fire to the hotel archive containing the recording of Lucien’s final night.
