Chapter 6 - THE FIRE BEHIND THE BALLROOM

Smoke entered the ballroom through the service corridor.
Guests had already gone home, but hotel employees remained inside collecting flowers, glassware, and abandoned gifts.
The fire began in the archive level beneath the kitchen.
That floor contained security recordings, legal backups, and the private server Miles used to store material against Celeste.
The alarm system ordered an immediate evacuation.
Valentina and I stood inside the boardroom when the lights changed.
A security officer opened the door.
“Everyone out.”
Celeste did not move.
Her attorneys tried to lead her toward the public staircase.
She looked instead toward the service elevator.
Rebecca saw it.
“You know where the server is.”
Celeste answered calmly.
“This is my family’s hotel.”
The elevator doors opened before anyone touched the control.
A man in maintenance clothing stepped out holding a metal fuel container.
He saw the detectives and ran.
Grant followed.
The man disappeared through the ballroom.
Valentina recognized him.
“Mother’s driver.”
The driver had transported Celeste to St. Agnes.
Moved documents from the lake house.
Delivered payments to Dr. Benton.
He had served her for twenty nine years.
He reached the marble staircase before hotel security blocked him.
Smoke thickened near the ceiling.
Firefighters entered through the loading corridor.
Grant arrested the driver.
Inside his coat was a remote storage key and a message from Celeste.
BURN THE ARCHIVE. LEAVE THE BALLROOM FOOTAGE.
She wanted the world to keep the recording of Valentina humiliating me.
She wanted the evidence of Lucien’s death destroyed.
Celeste read the message.
“That could have been sent by anyone.”
“From your encrypted account?” Rebecca asked.
“My phone was seized.”
“The message was scheduled yesterday.”
Celeste had prepared evidence destruction before the birthday party began.
She knew the hidden sister might appear.
Or she knew someone had located me.
Firefighters controlled the flames before the server room collapsed.
Most equipment suffered heat and water damage.
The primary storage drive had been removed before the fire.
Miles claimed he had hidden a backup inside the ballroom because Celeste would never destroy a room built for public admiration.
The technicians searched the chandeliers, stage controls, sound system, and cake table wiring.
The backup was found inside the base of the bronze birthday candelabrum.
Miles had placed it beside Valentina’s cake hours before I set down the old photograph.
The recording survived.
Lucien’s voice played inside a federal interview room.
“You told me Adeline died.”
Celeste answered.
“She was destroying this family.”
“She was seven.”
“She attacked Valentina.”
“Dr. Benton admits you instructed him to write that.”
A chair scraped.
Lucien continued.
“Ruth found her. Adeline survived.”
“You are upsetting Valentina for a stranger.”
“She is not a stranger. She is my daughter.”
“She is not yours.”
“I adopted her.”
“You embarrassed me by bringing her into the house.”
“You were her mother before you were my wife.”
Celeste’s voice sharpened.
“I did what was necessary to protect the daughter who belonged here.”
“Valentina belongs here. Adeline belongs here. You are the only person demanding one child vanish.”
Miles spoke in the background.
“Lucien, calm down.”
Lucien turned toward him.
“I know Valentina is yours.”
Silence followed.
Then Miles whispered:
“She is still your daughter.”
“Yes,” Lucien answered. “Because I raised her. That is why I will not allow either of you to use her.”
Valentina covered her mouth.
Her father had known.
He had not rejected her.
The lie about her blood had mattered to Celeste and Miles.
Not to Lucien.
The recording continued.
“I changed the trust,” Lucien said. “Adeline controls the company if she is found. Valentina remains protected. Neither of you will touch their shares.”
Celeste’s voice became very quiet.
“You would choose a dead girl over your wife?”
“I am choosing both daughters over the woman who harmed them.”
A glass struck the floor.
Miles spoke.
“Celeste, put that down.”
Lucien began coughing.
The sound worsened.
He asked what was inside his drink.
Celeste said nothing.
The recording ended after Miles called for the family physician.
He did not call emergency services.
Lucien remained alive for thirty seven minutes after the first symptoms.
The hospital stood nine minutes away.
Dr. Benton arrived instead.
He signed the death certificate before the body left the house.
Valentina listened with both hands against her face.
Celeste remained inside a separate room.
She had not heard the recovered audio yet.
Rebecca asked whether we were prepared to confront her.
“I am,” Valentina said.
Her voice shook.
I was not certain.
The mother who erased me had murdered the father who searched.
No courtroom sentence could return either part of my childhood.
We entered together.
Celeste looked at us and smiled faintly.
“My daughters have finally united.”
Valentina placed the audio transcript in front of her.
“You poisoned him.”
Celeste’s eyes stopped moving.
“He was going to destroy everything.”
“He protected me after learning Miles was my father.”
“He pitied you.”
“He loved me.”
“He loved control.”
“No. That was you.”
Celeste looked toward me.
“You came here in a server uniform to steal her life.”
I met her gaze.
“I came in the only uniform your family would allow near the truth.”
Valentina removed the half locket from her neck and placed it beside mine.
“You made me mourn a sister you visited every year.”
“I protected you.”
“You made me believe she died because of me.”
“You were easier to raise once you stopped asking for her.”
The sentence escaped before Celeste could stop it.
Valentina stared at her.
Not daughter.
Not heir.
A child made easier through guilt.
Rebecca entered with the arrest warrant.
Celeste remained seated while officers approached.
She looked toward me one final time.
“You think Valentina will share anything with you once the cameras leave?”
I looked at my sister.
“I do not know.”
Celeste smiled.
May you like
“Then I have not lost yet.”
Continue to the next part: With Celeste arrested, Adeline and Valentina must decide whether they are sisters or rivals for the empire Lucien left behind.
