Chapter 6 - The Research Center by the Lake

The live signal came from Mercer Ridge’s original research center north of Lake Forest.

The facility had officially closed after the explosion that killed Noah.

Company records showed the land had been sold.

The buyer was a shell corporation controlled by Marcus Mercer.

Graham wanted to send police immediately.

Claire stopped him.

“If Marcus controls officers the way he controls the board, Noah and Eleanor will be moved before anyone reaches them.”

Graham looked at the screen.

His mother sat upright despite the restraints. Nothing about her expression resembled the confused woman he had visited in private care.

For six years, Eleanor’s doctors told him advanced neurological disease had destroyed her memory.

Adrian Hale supervised her treatment.

The same doctor who explained Graham’s hearing loss.

The same man who injected Emma.

The pattern was no longer hidden.

Marcus did not need to kill people when a diagnosis could remove them quietly.

Graham assembled a small team he trusted personally. Claire insisted on coming.

Emma remained at the estate with a federal child advocate and two security officers chosen outside Mercer Ridge.

The girl resisted until Claire signed that she was going to bring Noah home.

Emma touched the missing eye of her rabbit and gave the toy to her mother.

The hidden camera might contain information they still needed.

The research center stood beside the frozen shoreline, surrounded by pine trees and a rusted security fence. Most windows were black.

One light moved beneath the building.

Graham entered through a drainage tunnel shown on the old construction plans. Claire followed him into a corridor that smelled of damp concrete and antiseptic.

His hearing had declined further.

The footsteps behind him sounded distant. He relied on visual signals from security and the vibrations moving through the floor.

For the first time, he understood a small part of Emma’s world.

Not silence.

Constant uncertainty about what happened outside his sight.

A guard appeared at the end of the passage.

Graham did not hear the weapon being drawn.

Claire did.

She struck the emergency light with the rabbit, plunging the corridor into darkness. Security disarmed the man.

The rabbit split along one seam.

A metal capsule rolled across the floor.

The missing eye had not been the only hidden compartment.

Claire opened the capsule.

Inside was a memory chip and a handwritten code.

Noah had built redundancy into a child’s toy because he expected adults to fail.

The chip contained architectural files for the research center and a treatment formula labeled E REVERSAL.

Emma’s hearing damage might not be permanent.

Claire pressed the chip against her chest.

Graham saw hope enter her face and feared what Marcus would do to destroy it.

They reached the lower medical wing.

Noah and Eleanor were gone.

The restraints remained warm.

A blood trail led toward the lake tunnel.

On the wall, Marcus had left a message.

BRING GRAHAM TO THE ORIGINAL SOUND ROOM.

The sound room occupied the center of the facility. Its walls were designed to absorb every vibration.

Inside, Graham would hear nothing.

Marcus knew exactly where to place a man already losing sound.

They entered.

The door sealed behind them.

Lights rose slowly.

Eleanor sat behind a glass partition.

Noah stood beside her with a gun pressed to his own head.

Marcus held the weapon.

He wore a dark suit and the backward lion ring.

“Welcome home,” Marcus said.

Graham could not hear him clearly.

He read the words from his uncle’s mouth.

Marcus knew and began turning his face away deliberately as he spoke.

A cruel advantage.

Claire moved where she could interpret.

Marcus told Graham the poisoning served two purposes.

The continuity agreement would transfer Mercer Ridge voting control.

Graham’s sudden hearing loss would also create public demand for the company’s experimental implant once Adrian Hale appeared to restore him.

A billionaire losing sound and recovering through Mercer Ridge technology would raise the company’s value overnight.

“You used children to build a product,” Graham said.

Marcus smiled.

“Your father did.”

Eleanor struck the glass.

Marcus turned toward her.

She shouted something Graham could not hear.

Claire read her lips.

“She says your father ordered the program shut down.”

Marcus shook his head.

Then Eleanor spoke again, slowly enough for Graham.

“Marcus poisoned him too.”

Graham’s father developed ringing and balance problems before his death. Adrian diagnosed heart medication side effects.

One night, he collapsed after dinner.

Marcus controlled the autopsy.

Eleanor discovered the dosing charts and threatened to expose him.

Adrian declared her mentally unstable.

Graham had signed the care order.

His hand.

His decision.

Another forged report presented as medical certainty.

“I put my mother in that facility,” he whispered.

Eleanor shook her head.

“You believed doctors.”

The words offered less forgiveness than truth.

Marcus pressed the gun harder against Noah.

“You want the antidote for your hearing and the formula for the child?”

Claire held the rabbit tighter.

“We already have it.”

Marcus’s eyes moved toward the toy.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Then Noah shouted.

“Do not trust the formula.”

A red light activated above the sound room.

Gas began entering through the ceiling.

Marcus stepped backward through a hidden door with Eleanor.

Noah threw himself against the closing partition.

Before it sealed, he looked directly at Claire and signed:

THE ANTIDOTE KILLS EMMA.

Continue to the next part: Noah warns that the formula hidden inside Emma’s rabbit is another trap as toxic gas fills the soundproof room.
