Chapter 2 - The Camera Inside the Rabbit

Graham took the stuffed rabbit to his private study.

Emma refused to release it at first.

She stood beside Claire with both hands wrapped around the worn fabric while security officers examined the hallway outside. The ballroom guests remained confined beneath polite supervision. Police had been called, but Graham no longer trusted that everyone arriving would be independent.

The Mercer name owned too many people.

He crouched several feet from Emma and kept his hands visible.

“I will give it back.”

She watched his mouth carefully.

Claire signed the sentence.

Emma shook her head.

Then she pointed at Vanessa, who stood near the study doors with an attorney and two security officers between her and the child.

Graham understood.

“You think she will take it.”

Emma nodded.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“This has become humiliating.”

Graham looked at her.

“A vial was found on a waiter who served my table.”

“And you have no proof I gave it to him.”

“No. I have a child who tried to stop me from drinking.”

“A deaf child who cannot understand adult conversations.”

Emma stared at Vanessa’s lips.

Then she signed.

Claire’s translation came quietly.

“She says you always speak slowly when you lie.”

Vanessa’s expression broke for half a second.

Graham nearly smiled.

Emma finally gave him the rabbit after Claire removed a stitched panel beneath its neck. Inside was a small rechargeable camera connected to a memory card.

“Why was this in her toy?” Graham asked.

Claire looked toward Vanessa.

“Because my daughter saw things no one believed.”

“What things?”

Claire hesitated.

Graham’s security chief entered with preliminary information from the toxicologist. The vial contained a concentrated compound known to damage the inner ear when taken repeatedly. In controlled hospital settings, related drugs were used for severe infections. In food, over months, the damage could appear gradual and difficult to explain.

Graham felt the room tilt.

The ringing in his ears became louder.

“Could it cause permanent hearing loss?”

“Yes.”

“Could specialists mistake the symptoms for stress or autoimmune disease?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked at her attorney.

“This proves nothing about me.”

Graham inserted the memory card into a secure laptop disconnected from the estate network.

There were dozens of short videos.

Most were recorded from Emma’s height. Hallways, kitchen counters, service stairs, the garden terrace. Some showed Claire cleaning while Emma waited nearby.

Then the files changed.

In one video, Vanessa stood beside Graham’s breakfast tray. She checked the doorway, removed a brown bottle from her sleeve, and added drops to his orange juice.

The date was three months earlier.

Another showed her pouring something into herbal tea.

Another showed Owen waiting near the pantry while Vanessa gave him a folded envelope.

Claire covered Emma’s eyes.

Graham did not.

He needed the child’s courage to have meaning.

Vanessa remained motionless.

Her attorney whispered something to her, but she shook him off.

“That could be anything,” she said. “Vitamins. Medication Graham already takes.”

“I do not take liquid medication.”

“You forget things now.”

The sentence was softly spoken.

Deliberate.

For the first time, Graham heard the full shape of the plan.

Not only hearing loss.

Memory.

Judgment.

Credibility.

If he accused Vanessa, she would say his condition had affected his mind.

Graham opened the most recent video.

It had been recorded that afternoon behind the ballroom’s velvet curtain.

Vanessa stood with Owen and another person whose face remained outside the frame. Only a hand was visible.

A man’s hand wearing the Mercer signet ring.

The unknown man said, “Tonight’s dose should finish the decline.”

The audio was faint, but Claire’s camera had captured enough.

Owen asked, “What happens after he cannot hear?”

Vanessa answered.

“Adrian declares him medically impaired. The board activates continuity control after the wedding.”

The unknown man placed a document on the table.

Graham recognized the first page.

It was the Mercer Ridge executive trust.

If the chief executive became medically incapable of informed communication, temporary voting authority passed to a designated personal guardian until a board review.

Graham had never designated Vanessa.

The document in the video contained his signature.

Forged.

The unknown man tapped the page.

“Once the marriage is registered, she becomes the default guardian.”

Vanessa’s attorney stepped away from her.

Even he had not known.

Graham paused the video.

“Who is the man?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Graham enlarged the hand.

The signet ring looked identical to his, but one detail differed. The lion on Graham’s ring faced left.

The lion on the unknown man’s ring faced right.

Only one other ring had been created that way.

It belonged to Marcus Mercer, Graham’s uncle and the former vice chairman of Mercer Ridge Technologies.

Marcus disappeared ten years earlier after a federal embezzlement investigation. His boat was found drifting on Lake Michigan with blood on the deck.

No body was recovered.

Graham’s father declared him dead.

Vanessa looked toward the dark window.

“You do not know what Marcus survived.”

“You knew he was alive.”

“He contacted me after your hearing began failing.”

“You began poisoning me before that.”

Her silence admitted it.

Claire reached for the laptop.

“There is another folder.”

It was protected by a password.

The hint read: BUNNY’S OTHER EYE.

Emma touched the empty socket on the rabbit.

Claire examined the stitching.

The missing button eye had not fallen out.

Someone had removed it.

Emma signed one sentence.

Claire turned toward Graham.

“She says the man upstairs took it.”

A security officer entered the study.

They had found the hidden gallery door open.

The passage led toward Graham’s private bedroom.

On the floor outside his safe lay the rabbit’s missing eye.

Beside it was a photograph of Claire’s husband, Noah Bennett.

Noah had died four years earlier in an explosion at a Mercer Ridge research facility.

On the back, someone had written:
