Chapter 4 - The Continuity Agreement

Owen survived.

The doctors found the same compound in his bloodstream, mixed with a sedative. Someone had placed it inside the bottled water given to him after his arrest.

The police interview room had no public access.

Only officers, Graham’s security chief, and a Mercer Ridge attorney had entered.

The conspiracy had already reached the investigation.

Graham moved Owen into a secure medical wing under private guard. He ordered independent blood testing for himself.

The results confirmed repeated exposure to an ototoxic substance over at least fourteen weeks.

The damage might be partly reversible if treatment began quickly.

It might also be permanent.

Graham heard the explanation as fragments through the ringing.

Words disappeared from the doctor’s mouth.

Inner ear.

Nerve response.

Possible recovery.

No guarantee.

Vanessa had sat beside him at every specialist appointment while the poison continued entering his food.

She had held his hand while pretending to fear the condition she was creating.

Graham returned to the ballroom before dawn.

The guests had been released after giving statements, but the decorations remained. Half empty champagne glasses covered the tables. White roses leaned beneath the heat of the chandeliers. The velvet curtain where Emma had hidden moved slightly in the ventilation.

Claire stood beside the banquet table.

Emma slept in her arms.

“You should take her home,” Graham said.

Claire looked at his mouth.

“She will not leave without the rabbit.”

“It is being copied.”

“She has lost enough things adults promised to return.”

Graham gave the toy back.

Emma woke when it touched her arm. She checked the hidden camera, then held the rabbit against her chest.

A convoy arrived outside.

Mercer Ridge’s emergency board had called a meeting inside the estate.

The request came from Susan Caldwell, Graham’s chief legal officer. She entered with six directors, two physicians, and a sealed court order.

Vanessa had not wasted time.

Susan looked at Graham with professional concern.

“Your health information has become material to the company.”

“My health information was obtained through a criminal act.”

“We do not yet have a criminal finding.”

“You have video.”

“We have a child’s hidden recording and an allegation from a housekeeper who concealed her connection to a former employee.”

Claire stiffened.

The language had already been prepared.

Graham was impaired.

Claire was deceptive.

Emma was unreliable.

Vanessa was merely accused.

Susan opened the continuity agreement.

Under Mercer Ridge bylaws, the board could temporarily suspend an executive who became unable to receive, process, or communicate material information.

Hearing loss alone did not qualify.

But Adrian Hale had submitted an emergency neurological opinion claiming Graham showed paranoia, memory confusion, and aggressive behavior.

The report had been signed six weeks earlier.

Before Graham accused anyone.

Before the engagement party.

Vanessa entered the ballroom with her attorney.

Police had released her pending further investigation because the vial was found on Owen, not in her possession. The video remained under authentication review.

She looked at Graham with practiced sadness.

“I asked them not to do this tonight.”

“You helped write it.”

“I wanted you protected.”

“From my company?”

“From decisions you may not understand.”

Emma watched Vanessa’s mouth.

Her small hands tightened around the rabbit.

Graham noticed.

He turned to the board.

“Who is designated temporary controller?”

Susan hesitated.

“The continuity trust names your legal spouse.”

“We are not married.”

Vanessa removed a document from her attorney’s folder.

A civil marriage certificate.

Filed that morning.

Graham stared at it.

His signature appeared beside hers.

The ceremony was listed as having occurred privately three days earlier at the estate chapel.

It had never happened.

Susan looked disturbed.

“I was told the public engagement event followed a legal ceremony.”

Vanessa’s composure weakened.

“Graham wanted privacy.”

Graham approached her.

“What did you use to create my signature?”

She said nothing.

“The tablet Marcus copied?”

Her eyes moved toward Susan.

The chief legal officer looked down.

Graham understood.

Susan knew Marcus was alive.

“Where is he?”

Susan closed the folder.

“You need to focus on your treatment.”

“Where is my uncle?”

Two private security officers entered from the east corridor.

They did not belong to Graham’s team.

The board had brought its own protection.

Susan requested that Graham surrender temporary control until an independent medical evaluation.

He refused.

The directors voted.

Four supported suspension.

Two opposed.

One abstained.

A majority.

The board believed the continuity agreement transferred voting authority to Vanessa as Graham’s legal wife.

Claire moved beside him.

“They planned every step.”

Graham looked at Susan.

“You authenticated the marriage certificate.”

“I verified the filing.”

“You knew I never married her.”

Susan’s face remained calm.

“You do not remember several recent meetings.”

Emma suddenly left Claire’s side.

She crossed the marble floor and stopped in front of Susan.

The girl pointed toward the lawyer’s wrist.

A faint brown stain marked the cuff of Susan’s white blouse.

Emma signed quickly.

Claire translated.

“She says that is the same medicine.”

Susan pulled her sleeve down.

Security moved toward Emma.

Graham stepped between them.

“No one touches her.”

Vanessa smiled without warmth.

“You are allowing a four year old child to run a six billion dollar company.”

“No. I am allowing the only honest witness in this room to speak.”

Emma pointed toward Susan’s folder.

Claire opened it before the lawyer could stop her.

Inside was a photograph of Noah Bennett entering the Mercer Ridge headquarters three days earlier.

He was alive.

Beside him walked Marcus Mercer.

Continue to the next part: The board’s own evidence proves Noah is alive and working with the uncle believed to be behind Graham’s poisoning.
