Chapter 5 - The Uncle Who Came Back

Walter collapsed into the rear seat as David drove away from the motel.
Olivia pressed a towel against the wound in Walter’s shoulder.
“You were shot.”
“Jason has poor aim,” Walter said.
It was the longest sentence Olivia had heard him speak in years.
David looked at her through the mirror.
“You have Daniel’s eyes.”
Olivia stared at the uncle she remembered only as a laughing man who sent birthday cards from overseas.
“You died in a construction accident.”
“No. Sharon tried to kill me.”
Walter closed his eyes.
“She tried to kill all of us.”
David explained that Daniel, Walter, and Sharon had built their first investment company in the late nineteen eighties.
Daniel handled legal documents.
Walter managed construction.
Sharon found properties whose owners were elderly, missing, or financially desperate.
The company made money quickly.
Then Sharon discovered they could make more by transferring properties into the names of people who did not understand what they were signing.
Daniel wanted out.
David agreed to help him collect evidence.
Sharon discovered their plan.
“She burned the motel to destroy the records,” David said. “Walter pulled me out before the roof collapsed.”
“Why let everyone believe you died?”
“Because Sharon controlled two police officers and a medical examiner.”
Olivia looked at Walter.
“You knew all of this while I lived in your house.”
Walter opened his eyes.
“I knew enough to be afraid.”
“Why did you stay with her?”
“To watch Jason.”
“Why?”
Walter’s gaze moved toward the black bag.
“Because Jason was trained to finish what Sharon started.”
David drove them to a small medical clinic owned by an old friend. While Walter’s wound was treated, Olivia connected the second drive to an offline computer.
A document appeared.
PROJECT OLIVIA.
The file included photographs of her college apartment, employment records, old bank statements, and notes about her friendships.
Jason had been watching her for nearly two years before their first meeting.
One entry read:
Target remains emotionally dependent on father. Delay contact until Daniel is removed.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“They planned his death before Jason met me.”
David nodded.
“Daniel discovered Sharon had placed several properties in your name when you were still a child. She needed your adult signature to move them.”
“Why use my name?”
“Because Daniel created a trust for you. It contained land along the San Antonio development corridor. Sharon believed the property would eventually be worth hundreds of millions.”
Jason’s instructions appeared next.
Gain trust.
Encourage marriage.
Move target to Texas.
Secure signatures through joint household documents.
Discredit target before separation.
Olivia stared at the final line.
Eliminate only if recovery fails.
Walter entered the room with his shoulder bandaged.
“You were never supposed to leave that house alive,” he said.
Olivia looked at him.
“Then why did Sharon let me walk out?”
“She thought Jason had already transferred the final property.”
“Had he?”
Walter placed one more document beside the computer.
It was a deed for a thirty acre parcel near downtown San Antonio.
The owner was listed as Olivia Hart Miller.
The transfer signature was dated two weeks earlier.
Beneath it was a second signature.
Walter’s.
“You witnessed the forgery,” Olivia said.
“No.”
Walter’s voice grew quiet.
May you like
“I reversed it.”
Continue to the next part: Walter’s secret signature makes Olivia the legal owner of the land Sharon has spent thirty years trying to steal.
