Chapter 10 - The File Beneath Her Father’s Name

Jason disappeared before the agents sealed the street.
Sharon was taken away alive, but unconscious.
Judge Collins and the banker were arrested inside the dining room.
Brittany agreed to cooperate.
Walter sat alone in the courtyard while investigators searched the house he had occupied for more than three decades.
Olivia stood near the iron gate.
It was the same place where Walter had handed her the black bag only hours earlier.
Her marriage, her father’s death, and her identity had all changed since then.
Rachel approached with a tablet.
“The original deed was accepted by the county system. The property is frozen under your control.”
“Can Jason still transfer it?”
“Not without your biometric approval.”
Olivia thought of the forged medical order.
“He will try something else.”
“He may not have time. Federal agents are searching every road out of the city.”
David joined them.
“Jason did not take the bag because of the deeds.”
Olivia looked at him.
“What else was inside?”
“Walter’s recorder.”
“The files were copied.”
“Not all of them.”
Walter rose from the courtyard chair.
“Daniel left one final recording that could only be played after the property trust was restored.”
Olivia stared at him.
“You hid another secret.”
“I did not know what it contained.”
Rachel opened the cloud copy of the flash drive.
A new file had appeared when the deed was accepted.
DANIEL HART FINAL INSTRUCTION.
Olivia pressed play.
Her father appeared on the screen.
This recording had been made after the highway crash.
Blood marked his forehead.
His breathing was weak.
“Olivia, if you are seeing this, then Walter kept his promise and the land is finally yours.”
Olivia gripped the tablet.
Daniel continued.
“The Miller fraud is larger than Sharon. She reports to people who control banks, courts, and law enforcement across Texas and Arizona.”
A list of names appeared beside him.
Some belonged to politicians.
Others belonged to men Olivia had seen attending dinner at the Miller house.
Then Daniel lifted a photograph.
It showed Jason as a child standing beside a tall man in a military uniform.
“Jason is not my son,” Daniel said. “Sharon created that lie to keep Walter divided from me.”
Walter closed his eyes.
Daniel continued.
“Jason’s biological father is the man who financed the first property thefts. He is also the person who ordered my death.”
The screen shifted to a name.
Before Olivia could read it, the file stopped.
A security warning appeared.
ACCESS INTERRUPTED BY PRIMARY DEVICE.
Rachel looked up.
“Jason has the original drive. He opened the file.”
Olivia’s phone rang.
Jason’s number appeared.
She answered.
His breathing was fast.
“You ruined everything,” he said.
“You ruined it when you married me.”
“You still believe this is about the land.”
“What is it about?”
A car engine roared behind his voice.
Then a second man spoke in the background.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Tell Olivia to come alone.”
Olivia recognized the voice from childhood.
It belonged to the man who had delivered the news of her father’s death seven years earlier.
Former Texas Ranger Samuel Crane.
The man whose name had almost appeared in Daniel’s final file.
Jason returned to the phone.
“He has the ledger. He has your father’s original death report. And he says Walter has lied about the most important part.”
Olivia looked at Walter.
His face had gone completely pale.
“What part?” she asked.
Jason laughed.
“The body you buried was not your father.”
The call ended.
A message arrived with a location outside San Antonio.
Beneath it was a photograph taken only minutes earlier.
Jason stood beside Samuel Crane.
Between them sat an older man tied to a chair.
His hair was white.
His face was scarred.
But Olivia recognized his eyes.
They were her own.
Walter whispered her father’s name.
“Daniel.”
Olivia lifted her gaze toward the road.
In the distance, a black vehicle waited beyond the iron gate.
Its rear door slowly opened.
Someone inside raised the gray elephant Emma had once left during a visit to the Miller house.
The same toy visible in Daniel’s final recording.
Olivia stepped toward the gate.
Walter caught her wrist.
“Do not go.”
She pulled free.
“You have told me that every time the truth was about to change my life.”
Olivia walked toward the waiting car.
Behind her, federal radios erupted with reports that Jason had been seen in three different counties at the same time.
Ahead of her, the black vehicle’s engine started.
The person inside lowered the window.
Olivia stopped when she saw the face.
It was not Jason.
It was not Samuel Crane.
It was the missing woman from Jason’s third fake marriage.
She held the gray elephant in one hand and Daniel Hart’s ledger in the other.
“Get in, Olivia,” she said. “Your father is alive, but he is not the man you remember.”
The car door opened wider.
Olivia looked back once at Walter, Rachel, and the house built on stolen names.
Then she stepped toward the truth.

The vehicle pulled away before anyone could see whether she had climbed inside.
Continue to the next part: Olivia must find Daniel before Jason’s final victim reveals why every woman he married was chosen from the same bloodline.
