Chapter 2 - The Signature at the Bottom

The second video began with Daniel Hart sitting inside a parked car.
Olivia recognized the faded blue shirt he wore during his final visit to Tucson.
He looked exhausted.
Afraid.
“If you are watching this,” Daniel said, “then I failed to stop them.”
Olivia stopped breathing.
Behind her, Jason pounded against the iron gate while Walter held him back.
Daniel continued.
“Jason Miller and his mother are using marriages, shell companies, and forged identities to acquire properties from people who never know they own them.”
Olivia looked down at the deeds.
One listed a commercial building near the San Antonio River Walk.
Another listed three rental homes in Tucson.
All were registered under Olivia’s name.
Daniel leaned closer to the camera.
“They are using my daughter as a shield. If an investigation begins, the debts, taxes, and fraudulent transfers will lead directly to her.”
Olivia’s legs weakened.
A police car turned onto the street.
Then another.
She expected relief.
Instead, Walter shook his head sharply.
“Do not go to them,” he called through the gate.
Olivia hesitated.
The first officer stepped out.
Jason immediately pointed toward her.
“She stole private financial records from my family.”
Sharon appeared behind him, pressing one hand dramatically against her chest.
“She has been unstable since the divorce.”
The officer looked toward Olivia.
“Ma’am, place the bag on the ground.”
Walter’s warning repeated in her mind.
Do not trust Sharon.
Olivia took one step backward.
The officer’s hand moved toward his holster.
“Put down the bag.”
A black sedan pulled between Olivia and the police car.
The passenger door opened.
A woman in a cream suit leaned across the seat.
“Get in.”
Olivia recognized her.
Rachel Greene had been Daniel Hart’s attorney in Tucson.
Olivia climbed into the car.
Rachel accelerated before the officers could surround them.
In the rear window, Olivia saw Walter still blocking Jason at the gate.
Sharon slapped Walter across the face.
He did not react.
“What is happening?” Olivia demanded.
Rachel glanced at the black bag.
“Your father contacted me four days before he died. He believed someone was following him.”
“Why did you never tell me?”
“Because he made me promise to remain silent until Walter gave you that bag.”
Olivia stared at her.
“You knew Walter?”
“Your father did.”
Rachel turned onto a narrow side street.
“Daniel believed Walter was the only Miller who wanted to stop the fraud.”
Olivia opened another bank record.
The account contained more than eight million dollars.
Her name was listed as the owner.
“I do not have eight million dollars.”
“No,” Rachel said. “But someone has been moving money through your identity for five years.”
Olivia’s phone rang again.
This time it was Walter.
She answered.
His breathing was uneven.
“Jason knows where you are going,” he said.
“Where am I going?”
“To the only property he could never transfer out of your father’s name.”
The call suddenly ended.
Rachel’s face tightened.
“What property?”
Olivia checked the deed at the bottom of the envelope.
It listed an abandoned motel outside Tucson.
The Sunset Cactus Inn.
Rachel went pale.

“That place burned down the night before your father died.”
