Chapter 5

The ballroom stood in complete silence.

Victor looked around at the hundreds of guests.

Business leaders.

Judges.

Old family friends.

People who had respected the Ashford name for decades.

Now every eye was fixed on him.

For the first time in seventeen years...

There was nowhere left to hide.

He let out a long, exhausted breath.

"It was never about the baby."

Catherine stared at him in disbelief.

"What?"

Victor slowly lowered his head.

"It was about the inheritance."

Seventeen years earlier, Edward Ashford had quietly rewritten his will after Emily's birth.

The family fortune—worth billions—had always been expected to pass through the eldest surviving branch of the Ashford family.

Before Emily was born, Victor believed that one day he would inherit control of the family estate and foundation if anything happened to Edward.

But everything changed the day Emily entered the world.

Edward amended every legal document.

The Ashford estate...

The investment portfolio...

The charitable foundation...

The ancestral properties...

Everything would pass to his daughter.

If she died before adulthood, the fortune would remain in trust.

Victor would inherit nothing.

"I found the new will by accident," Victor admitted.

"I realized that as long as Emily lived..."

"...my future was gone."

Gasps rippled through the ballroom.

Catherine's eyes filled with tears.

"You were jealous..."

"...of a three-month-old baby?"

Victor closed his eyes.

"I told myself I deserved what Edward had."

"I convinced myself I was saving the family from a child who couldn't possibly understand responsibility."

He gave a hollow laugh.

"It sounds insane now."

Judge Bennett answered quietly,

"It was insane then."

Victor continued.

"I couldn't bring myself to kill her."

The room went deathly still.

"So I ordered Margaret to take her away."

"I told her to leave the country and never come back."

"I promised her money."

"When she refused..."

"...she disappeared with Emily instead."

He looked toward Grace.

"I spent years searching for you."

Grace frowned.

"Searching for me?"

Victor nodded.

"Not to bring you home."

"To make sure you never returned."

Those words hit Catherine harder than anything else that night.

She instinctively pulled Grace closer.

"No one will ever take you away again."

Grace buried her face in her mother's shoulder.

For seventeen years, she had imagined what it would feel like to be held by her mother.

Now she silently cried in the embrace she had waited a lifetime for.

Detective Hayes stepped forward.

"Victor Ashford, based on the evidence recovered and your statements made tonight, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, obstruction of justice, evidence tampering, and fraud."

Two detectives approached.

Victor didn't resist.

As handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he looked at Catherine one final time.

"I'm sorry."

Catherine's expression didn't change.

"No."

"You're sorry you were caught."

Victor lowered his eyes.

He knew she was right.

Without another word, he was led through the grand ballroom.

The same guests who had once admired him silently stepped aside.

No one defended him.

No one applauded.

The massive doors closed behind him.

The echo lingered through the hall.

For several moments, no one spoke.

Then Catherine turned toward Grace.

Her hands gently cupped her daughter's face.

"I missed seventeen birthdays."

Grace smiled through tears.

"We can celebrate them now."

Catherine laughed and cried at the same time.

"I missed your first steps."

Grace squeezed her hands.

"You'll be there for my next ones."

"I missed hearing you call me 'Mom.'"

Grace whispered the word she had dreamed of saying all her life.

"Mom."

Catherine broke down completely, wrapping her daughter in another embrace.

Around them, many guests quietly wiped away tears.

Six months later...

Ashford Manor opened its gates for another gala.

This time, it wasn't a fundraiser.

It was a celebration.

Grace—whose birth name had indeed been Emily Ashford—had officially reclaimed her identity, though she chose to keep the name Grace Emily Ashford in honor of the grandmother who had risked everything to save her.

At the entrance to the estate stood a newly unveiled bronze statue.

Not of the Ashford family.

But of Margaret Holloway.

Its inscription read:

"She had every reason to save herself. Instead, she saved a child."

Catherine established the Margaret Holloway Foundation, dedicated to supporting missing children and the families searching for them.

Every year, on the anniversary of Emily's return, the foundation funded new investigations into cold missing-child cases across the country.

One quiet evening, Catherine and Grace stood together beneath the same crystal chandelier where their lives had changed forever.

Grace looked up at her mother.

"Do you ever wish those seventeen years had never happened?"

Catherine thought for a long moment.

"I wish they had."

She gently kissed her daughter's forehead.

"But I also know this..."

"They stole seventeen years from us."

"They will never steal another day."

Mother and daughter walked out of the ballroom together.

Not as strangers.

Not as victims.

But as the family they had never stopped being.

And for the first time in seventeen years...

May you like

They were finally going home.

The End.
