Chapter 1

The grand ballroom shimmered beneath the glow of an enormous crystal chandelier.

Hundreds of distinguished guests dressed in elegant black-tie attire filled the hall.

Politicians.

Business tycoons.

Foreign ambassadors.

Members of old aristocratic families.

Tonight's charity gala was the most prestigious event of the year.

Every conversation revolved around one woman.

Lady Catherine Ashford.

The wealthy widow whose family's philanthropic foundation had changed countless lives.

Elegant in a floor-length black gown adorned with diamonds, Catherine stood at the center of the ballroom greeting guests with effortless grace.

Everything was flawless.

Until the doors slowly opened.

A young girl stepped inside.

She couldn't have been more than seventeen.

She wore a simple white dress.

No expensive jewelry.

No designer handbag.

Only a small vintage locket hanging from a worn silver chain around her neck.

She looked frightened.

But determined.

Whispers immediately spread across the ballroom.

"Who invited her?"

"She's not on the guest list."

"She looks completely out of place."

The girl ignored the stares.

Her eyes searched the room.

Finally...

They landed on Catherine.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

She slowly walked forward.

Every step echoed across the polished marble floor.

The orchestra stopped playing.

Guests turned to watch.

Catherine frowned.

She had never seen the girl before.

Yet...

Something about those eyes felt strangely familiar.

The girl stopped only a few feet away.

Her lips trembled.

"...Mother?"

The single word silenced the ballroom.

Catherine stared at her in disbelief.

"I'm sorry?"

The girl's voice shook.

"I've spent years looking for you."

"I think..."

"...I think you're my mother."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Catherine's expression hardened instantly.

"This is absurd."

She glanced toward security.

"Who allowed her inside?"

The girl quickly shook her head.

"Please..."

"Just listen."

"I don't want money."

"I don't want your name."

"I only want the truth."

Catherine's patience snapped.

"No."

"You want attention."

"You've chosen the wrong family."

She stepped closer, her voice cold enough to freeze the room.

"Stop pretending you belong here!"

The words hit the girl like a slap.

Her shoulders shook.

Tears streamed down her face.

"I swear..."

"...I'm telling the truth."

Catherine pointed toward the entrance.

"Leave."

"Before security removes you."

The girl reached for the old locket around her neck.

"My grandmother told me..."

"...if I ever found you..."

"...to show you this."

Before she could finish—

A man in a perfectly tailored tuxedo suddenly pushed through the crowd.

"Enough!"

He strode toward the girl with unmistakable urgency.

His face was pale.

His breathing uneven.

Several guests recognized him immediately.

Victor Ashford.

Catherine's late husband's younger brother.

He looked directly at the girl.

His voice was sharp.

"What do you think you're doing?"

The girl took a nervous step backward.

"I just wanted her to see—"

Victor lunged forward.

His hand struck the silver chain around her neck.

The old locket snapped free.

It flew through the air...

Hit the marble floor...

And slid several feet across the ballroom.

Clink...

The ancient clasp broke open.

Silence.

Complete silence.

Inside the locket rested two tiny photographs.

One showed a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

The other...

Displayed an ornate royal family crest engraved in gold.

Catherine's eyes widened.

Her breathing stopped.

"No..."

She slowly walked toward the locket as though hypnotized.

Her hands trembled violently.

She knelt on the marble floor...

Picked it up...

And stared at the crest.

It couldn't be.

Only one family in the country carried that symbol.

Her family.

A crest never duplicated.

Never copied.

Never sold.

One that had disappeared...

Along with her infant daughter.

Seventeen years ago.

A tear fell onto the locket.

Then another.

Catherine looked up at the crying girl.

Her voice broke into sobs.

"Impossible..."

She clutched the locket against her chest.

"You're..."

Another sob escaped.

"...you're my daughter."

The ballroom erupted into horrified whispers.

Guests covered their mouths.

Some began crying.

Others stared in disbelief.

The girl froze.

For seventeen years...

She had dreamed of hearing those words.

Slowly...

She took one trembling step toward her mother.

Catherine opened her arms.

But before they could embrace—

Victor rushed forward.

He grabbed the girl's shoulders with both hands and violently pulled her back.

His face twisted with panic.

He shouted loud enough for the entire ballroom to hear.

"DON'T BELIEVE HER!"

He pointed wildly at the girl.

"She's NOT your daughter!"

The room fell deathly silent.

Because Victor looked...

May you like

Far more terrified...

Than the girl he was accusing.
