Chapter 2

The ballroom fell into stunned silence.

Victor's grip tightened around the girl's shoulders.

"Don't listen to her!" he shouted again.

"She's lying!"

The young girl winced in pain but didn't struggle.

Her eyes never left Catherine.

For years...

She had imagined this moment.

Thousands of times.

Never like this.

Catherine slowly rose from the marble floor, still clutching the broken locket.

Her heart pounded so violently she could barely breathe.

She recognized every tiny scratch on its silver surface.

She had chosen that locket herself.

Seventeen years earlier.

It had been a gift from her late mother.

Inside, she had placed two things.

A photograph of her newborn daughter.

And the Ashford family crest.

"There are only two lockets like this in the world," she whispered.

"I kept one..."

"...and I put the other around my baby's neck."

Her voice cracked.

"It disappeared with her."

The guests exchanged uneasy glances.

No one dared interrupt.

Seventeen years earlier...

Catherine Ashford had given birth to a beautiful baby girl.

She and her husband, Edward, had waited nearly ten years for a child.

Doctors had told them it might never happen.

So when little Emily was born...

She became the center of their world.

The Ashford estate was filled with laughter.

Every servant adored the baby.

Every family member celebrated her arrival.

Even Victor, Edward's younger brother, seemed overjoyed.

He carried the baby around the gardens.

Bought expensive toys.

Spoiled her endlessly.

Catherine trusted him completely.

She often joked,

"Emily has two fathers."

Victor would simply smile.

"I'd do anything for her."

At the time...

She believed him.

Then came the night that destroyed everything.

A violent thunderstorm swept across the countryside.

Lightning shook the windows of Ashford Manor.

Emily was only three months old.

Catherine had finally fallen asleep after hours of comforting the restless baby.

Just before dawn...

She woke to complete silence.

Too much silence.

Every mother knows the difference.

She rushed into the nursery.

The crib...

Was empty.

Her scream echoed through the mansion.

Servants searched every room.

Security locked the estate.

Police arrived within minutes.

The gates had never been opened.

No alarms had sounded.

It was as if the baby had simply...

Vanished.

The investigation lasted years.

Kidnapping.

Ransom.

Custody disputes.

Human trafficking.

Every possibility was explored.

No ransom demand ever came.

No fingerprints.

No witnesses.

No trace of the child.

The newspapers called it

"The Ashford Miracle Disappearance."

Television stations covered the story for months.

Private investigators searched across three countries.

Nothing.

Edward blamed himself.

He became obsessed with finding their daughter.

He spent millions funding investigations.

His health deteriorated under the weight of guilt.

Five years later...

He died of a heart attack.

His final words to Catherine were heartbreaking.

"Promise me..."

"...if she ever comes home..."

"...don't let her think we stopped looking."

Catherine kept that promise every day of her life.

Every birthday...

She baked a small cake.

Every Christmas...

She wrapped one extra present.

Every year...

She quietly donated to organizations searching for missing children.

She never accepted that Emily was gone forever.

But after seventeen years...

Hope had become something she carried silently.

Hidden deep inside her heart.

Back in the ballroom...

Catherine slowly looked at the young girl.

Tears blurred her vision.

"What..."

"...what's your name?"

The girl swallowed hard.

"My grandmother called me Grace."

"It's the only name I've ever known."

"She said my real name belonged to another life."

Catherine's breath caught.

"What else did she tell you?"

Grace reached into her small handbag.

She carefully unfolded an old, faded letter.

The edges had turned yellow with age.

"My grandmother told me..."

"...if she died before telling me everything..."

"...I was to give this letter to the woman whose crest was inside the locket."

She handed it to Catherine.

Catherine recognized the handwriting instantly.

It belonged to Margaret Holloway.

The elderly midwife who had helped deliver Emily.

Margaret had disappeared just weeks after the kidnapping.

Her body had never been found.

With trembling hands, Catherine unfolded the letter.

The first sentence made her knees weaken.

"Dear Lady Ashford, if you are reading this, I have failed to protect your daughter."

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

Victor's face turned ghostly white.

Catherine continued reading.

Each line stole the color from her face.

The letter claimed...

Emily had not been kidnapped by strangers.

She had been taken...

By someone inside the Ashford family.

Catherine slowly lifted her eyes from the page.

Her gaze locked onto Victor.

For the first time that evening...

He looked genuinely terrified.

He took one step backward.

Then another.

"That letter..."

"...it's fake."

His voice shook.

"You can't believe something written by a dead woman."

Catherine folded the letter carefully.

"I haven't finished reading it."

Victor's breathing became uneven.

"Then don't."

It wasn't a request.

It sounded like fear.

The guests noticed.

So did Catherine.

She looked back down at the final paragraph.

Her hands began to tremble uncontrollably.

Because the last sentence didn't merely reveal who had taken her baby.

It named the person who had ordered it.

Catherine slowly whispered,

"Oh... my God."

The ballroom waited.

No one dared speak.

No one dared breathe.

May you like

Because whatever name was written on that final line...

Was about to destroy the Ashford family forever.
