Chapter 8 - The Device Beneath Chloe’s Skin

The hospital prepared Chloe for emergency surgery.

Removing the implanted monitor would take nearly an hour. Jonah could trigger another contraction before surgeons reached the control leads.

A biomedical technician created a temporary signal shield around the bed.

It reduced the remote connection but did not eliminate it.

Chloe lay beneath blankets with sweat covering her face.

“I want it out.”

“They are preparing.”

“What if he does it again?”

I held her hand.

“Then we stay with you through it.”

She looked toward Emma in the next room.

“Do not trade her for me.”

“I won’t.”

“Promise.”

“I promise I will not return anyone to Jonah.”

Rebecca developed another plan.

Emma knew the surveillance network architecture. She could create a false signal making Jonah believe she and the trust key were moving toward the airfield.

While he prepared to receive them, CID and federal agents would enter through an unused maintenance route.

I was not authorized to join the tactical entry.

This time, I did not argue.

Chloe needed me at the hospital.

The most protective action was not always the most dramatic one.

Emma connected to the secure system from her room.

She sent a copy of Martin’s trust seal code and a simulated vehicle beacon toward the bunker.

Jonah responded immediately.

A video window opened.

He stood inside a command room lined with monitors.

The patent rail rested inside a military console.

“You survived longer than I expected,” he told Emma.

“So did you.”

“Bring me the original ledger access.”

“You already have it.”

“No. Martin divided the key.”

Emma looked toward me.

The brass key Chloe carried opened the physical archive.

The patent rail contained the server address.

A third component remained missing.

Martin had divided control among Chloe, Emma, and Karina.

I had never received anything from him.

Then I remembered the old voicemail he left before his death.

I kept it because it was the last time he said my name.

The message sounded ordinary.

Karina, the storm is coming. Check the windows. Tell Chloe the quiet room is ready. Count backward if the lights fail.

I played it for Emma.

“Count backward,” she repeated.

The pauses between Martin’s sentences formed a numerical sequence.

Nine.

Seven.

Four.

Two.

The sequence unlocked a hidden section of the trust records.

My father had given me the final key without telling me what it was.

I entered it into Emma’s terminal.

The surveillance archive opened.

Thousands of folders appeared.

Names of veterans.

Spouses.

Children.

Medical workers.

Every device Jonah’s network had monitored.

A release command waited at the bottom.

Martin designed the system so evidence could be sent simultaneously to federal inspectors, courts, journalists, and affected families.

Once released, Jonah could not erase every copy.

Rebecca authorized activation.

Before I pressed it, Chloe’s monitor alarm sounded.

The signal shield failed.

Her body contracted again.

The surgeon shouted for emergency medication.

Jonah appeared on the tablet.

“You have the final key.”

I stepped in front of the camera.

“Yes.”

“Close the archive.”

“No.”

Chloe screamed behind me.

My hand hovered over the release command.

Jonah watched my face.

“You can save your sister or expose people you have never met.”

It was the choice abusers always offered.

Protect the person you love by sacrificing everyone else.

Keep one secret and become part of the next injury.

Chloe forced her eyes open.

“Release it.”

Her voice was barely audible.

I looked at her.

“Do it.”

I pressed the command.

The archive began transmitting.

Jonah increased the device to maximum output.

Then the bunker connection disappeared.

CID agents had cut the external network.

The muscle contraction stopped.

Chloe collapsed against the bed, conscious but exhausted.

Surgeons moved her toward the operating room.

Rebecca called through the secure line.

“We entered the bunker.”

“Jonah?”

“Gone.”

The command room was empty.

The patent rail remained in the console.

A blood trail led toward a maintenance shaft beneath the airfield.

Jonah had been injured during the entry but escaped.

On one monitor, agents found a live camera feed from Diane’s detention room.

Jonah had been watching her.

A message appeared beneath the image.

SHE KNOWS WHERE MARTIN’S ORIGINAL BODY IS.

I stared at the words.

Martin had been buried nine years earlier.

May you like

At least, we believed he had.

Continue to the next part: Diane admits the body at Martin’s funeral was never independently identified and Jonah kept evidence from the crash hidden beneath the mansion.
