Chapter 7 - The Water Beneath Site Twelve

Water exploded through the lower tunnel.

It struck Jonah’s legs first and swept the documents from Voss’s desk. Medical reports spun through the corridor before disappearing beneath the rising current.

The adaptive support system lifted Chloe and Emma nearly four feet above the floor.

Martin had designed it to protect users during equipment failures.

Jonah never studied the system beyond its financial value.

Diane stood on the wrong side of the room.

The water struck her knees and pushed her against the glass wall.

“Jonah!”

He looked toward her.

Then toward the open cabinet containing the encrypted patent rail.

For one second, he hesitated.

That second told Diane exactly what she meant to him.

Jonah grabbed the rail.

He left her in the water.

I caught Chloe around the waist as the support brace released her toward me. Rebecca’s agents reached Emma and secured her bed to an emergency track.

Voss attempted to escape through the upper passage.

A CID agent restrained him before he reached the door.

Diane lost her footing.

The current pulled her toward the lower gate.

Chloe extended her good arm.

“Mom!”

Diane caught her fingers.

Pain crossed Chloe’s face as the strain reached her injured wrist.

I grabbed Diane’s coat and helped pull her onto the raised platform.

She collapsed beside us coughing.

Chloe had saved the woman who watched Jonah drag her across broken glass.

Diane looked at her daughter.

For a moment, something human appeared in her face.

Then she saw the agents.

“She attacked me.”

Chloe went still.

“You were drowning.”

“She activated the system.”

“To save Emma.”

Diane turned toward Rebecca.

“My daughter is unstable. You witnessed it.”

I understood then that evidence alone would never create remorse.

Diane could survive any truth by rewriting her role inside it.

Jonah escaped through the upper tunnel carrying the patent rail and storm control device.

Agents pursued him while the water continued rising.

Emma’s medical condition prevented immediate movement beyond the emergency platform.

I remained with Chloe and the medics.

“You saved her,” I said.

“She is still my mother.”

“Yes.”

“That does not mean I want her near me.”

“No.”

The distinction mattered.

Compassion did not require access.

Rebecca found the original tunnel controls and stopped the flood before it reached the medical wing.

Diane and Voss were taken into custody.

Emma was transported under federal protection to the same hospital as Chloe.

Before leaving Site Twelve, she asked to speak with me.

“Martin did not die because of the patents alone.”

“What else did he find?”

“Jonah was using disabled dependents to test unapproved tracking systems.”

The monitoring application on Chloe’s phone was part of a larger program.

Sentinel Recovery installed hidden surveillance tools inside adaptive devices issued to veterans and military families.

Crutches, wheelchairs, medical tablets, and home support systems transmitted location and audio data without consent.

The company called it safety monitoring.

Jonah used it to collect private information, pressure witnesses, and identify anyone discussing financial fraud.

Emma discovered the system.

Martin built a method to expose it.

The patent rail Jonah carried contained the access key to every hidden recording server.

“If he destroys it?” I asked.

“The evidence remains encrypted forever.”

“Where will he go?”

Emma looked toward the storm beyond the tunnel entrance.

“The command bunker.”

Jonah’s unit maintained an emergency operations bunker beneath the military airfield. If he connected the rail to the secure network, he could erase the surveillance records and activate remote control over thousands of devices.

That included Chloe’s implanted muscle stimulation monitor.

The hospital had fitted it years earlier to reduce severe spasms.

Voss approved the device.

Jonah might be able to control it remotely.

At the hospital, technicians attempted to disconnect Chloe’s monitor.

The system required a military administrator code.

Before they could isolate it, Chloe’s body stiffened.

Her back arched against the bed.

Every muscle in her legs contracted at once.

She screamed.

Jonah’s voice came through the bedside tablet.

“You wanted control of your own body.”

The monitor increased again.

“Let us see how long that lasts.”

Technicians cut power to the room, but the implanted device continued running through its battery.

Rebecca traced the command to the airfield bunker.

Jonah was already inside.

Then he sent a second message.

Bring Emma and the trust key, or Chloe’s next contraction does not stop.

Continue to the next part: Karina must reach the bunker before Jonah turns the medical device inside Chloe’s body into a weapon.
