Chapter 10 - The Voice Behind the Wall

The call lasted eleven seconds.

Forensic technicians confirmed it came from a disposable satellite device moving south along the interstate.

The male voice matched Martin’s archived recordings with eighty nine percent probability.

Age, injury, and poor audio quality prevented complete certainty.

Chloe did not need a machine to tell her.

“That was Dad.”

She sat upright despite the surgical pain.

“We have to go.”

“No.”

Her expression hardened.

“He has him.”

“Jonah wants you outside federal protection.”

“He kept Dad for nine years.”

“And he will use that to make us move without thinking.”

Chloe looked toward the window.

“I have spent years being told I cannot decide because I am disabled.”

“This is not about your disability.”

“Then let me decide.”

I stopped.

She was right.

Protection could become another form of control when I treated her fear as permission to choose for her.

“What do you want to do?”

“I want to help find him. I do not want to return to the mansion alone. I do not want Diane near me. And I want every decision explained before anyone makes it.”

Rebecca agreed.

The investigation created a controlled response.

We sent Jonah a message stating Chloe would return to the mansion with the brass key. In reality, the house remained surrounded by federal agents, and Chloe participated from a secure medical vehicle several blocks away.

I entered the mansion carrying a duplicate key.

The shattered dishes had been removed, but dark stains remained between the marble tiles.

Diane’s heel mark still crossed the cracked phone screen lying inside an evidence outline.

Jonah’s voice came through the home speaker system.

“Where is Chloe?”

“Safe.”

“Then Martin remains hidden.”

“Let me hear him.”

A pause followed.

Then my father spoke.

“Karina, do not bring her here.”

The sound came from beneath the house.

Agents traced it toward the hidden workshop below the library.

We had searched every visible wall.

Martin’s original plans showed no additional rooms.

Chloe studied the plans from the vehicle.

“Dad changed the lift design.”

“What do you see?”

“The lower platform has two stopping levels.”

The elevator beneath the fireplace had descended to the workshop.

A second level existed below it.

The control required pressure from two points at once, designed so a person using crutches could activate it without releasing support.

Chloe explained the sequence.

I entered it.

The elevator descended another twenty feet.

The room below contained servers, military communications equipment, and medical storage.

Martin sat behind a glass wall.

His hair was white. One side of his face sagged from an untreated injury. Metal braces supported both legs.

He was alive.

Jonah stood behind him with a pistol.

For several seconds, I could not breathe.

Dad pressed one hand against the glass.

“You came.”

Jonah smiled.

“She always comes.”

Federal agents entered the upper workshop, but the lower room sealed automatically.

Jonah held the original patent rail beside the server.

The one recovered from the airfield had been a duplicate.

“You released the surveillance archive,” he said. “But this contains the ownership key.”

“Ownership of what?”

“Every patent Martin hid inside Chloe’s trust.”

Martin shook his head.

“Do not listen.”

Jonah continued.

“The Army paid for half the development. The government can seize it unless Chloe signs the private transfer.”

“You want control before the seizure.”

“I want what I earned.”

“You earned nothing.”

“I kept Martin alive.”

My father looked at him.

“You kept me useful.”

Jonah forced him to record messages, update encryption systems, and authorize patent renewals. Whenever Martin refused, Jonah threatened Chloe and me.

Diane knew he survived during the first year.

Then Jonah told her Martin died from an infection.

She never asked for proof.

The glass wall began lowering.

Jonah pulled Martin from the chair and placed the gun against his head.

“Bring Chloe down.”

“No.”

“She signs, and he leaves.”

“You will not let anyone leave.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You learned something after all.”

The lower room lights flickered.

Chloe’s voice entered through the speaker.

“Dad?”

Martin closed his eyes.

“Chloe.”

She had connected through the mansion’s original accessibility network.

Jonah turned toward the ceiling.

“You were told to remain outside.”

“It is my house.”

“You cannot even enter this room without help.”

“No.”

Her voice remained steady.

“But Dad built the room to obey me.”

The adaptive system recognized Chloe as the primary resident.

Doors opened.

Weapon lockers sealed.

The glass partition rose between Jonah and Martin.

Emergency braces locked around my father’s chair and pulled him backward.

Jonah fired once.

The bullet struck reinforced glass.

Federal agents entered through the newly opened service door and forced him to the floor.

For the first time in years, Chloe had controlled what happened inside her own home.

Martin was transported to the hospital.

Doctors believed he could survive, though years of untreated injuries had caused permanent damage.

Diane requested to see him.

He refused.

Jonah, Voss, and Diane faced federal charges involving kidnapping, abuse, financial fraud, unlawful surveillance, medical coercion, and conspiracy. Local officers who buried Chloe’s reports were suspended.

The trust court canceled Diane’s authority.

Chloe became the sole controller of the mansion, accounts, and patents.

She ordered every accessibility feature restored.

Emma joined the independent oversight board supervising the technology.

I remained nearby without moving into Chloe’s home.

She did not need another person taking control because they loved her.

She needed people who respected the word no.

Three months later, Martin was strong enough to sit with us inside the repaired library.

Sunlight crossed the floor where Jonah once dragged Chloe.

Dad held both our hands.

“I thought I would never see you together again.”

Chloe smiled through tears.

“You should have trusted us sooner.”

“I should have.”

No one pretended his secrets had been harmless simply because he intended to protect us.

That evening, Rebecca brought the final recovered file from Jonah’s lower server.

It had been encrypted under a military command code higher than his rank.

The video showed the first night Martin was held beneath the mansion.

Jonah stood beside the bed.

Diane waited near the door.

A third person entered wearing a general’s uniform.

His face remained outside the camera frame.

He looked toward Martin.

“Your daughters are not the problem.”

Martin answered, “Then why watch them?”

“Because one of them contacted CID six years ago.”

The general placed a folder on the bed.

My name appeared across the cover.

He continued.

“Karina remembers more about Emma Reed than she realizes.”

Rebecca paused the video.

“I never reported your name beyond the original case.”

“Who had access?”

“Three senior officers.”

The recording resumed.

The general leaned close to Martin.

“If Karina ever calls Rebecca Hale again, activate the family protocol.”

Jonah asked, “Which one?”

“The one Diane prepared before Chloe was born.”

Martin’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Diane began crying.

The general finally stepped into view.

Rebecca went pale.

The man was Lieutenant General Samuel Hale.

Her father.

He had died seven years earlier.

At least, that was what military records claimed.

My secure phone rang.

The caller identification displayed Rebecca’s private number.

She was standing beside me.

I answered.

A man spoke.

“Karina, Jonah was never the highest rank in the room.”

Behind him, someone struggled to breathe.

Then Diane’s voice whispered, “Do not let Rebecca open the birth file.”

The call ended.

A new document appeared on Chloe’s trust server.

It was a sealed hospital record created twenty six years earlier.

Patient: Diane Brooks.

Number of live births: Two.

Chloe stared at me.

“Mom only told us about one baby that year.”

The mansion lights went out.

When they returned, Rebecca was gone.

Her chair remained beside the open server.

On the screen, a message waited.

THE FIRST DAUGHTER HAS BEEN RECOVERED.

Continue to the next part: Karina and Chloe must discover whose birth Diane erased twenty six years earlier and why Rebecca vanished moments after her father appeared in the final recording.
