“What happens if the loan fails?” I asked.
Naomi answered:
“Mercer Freight has a tax payment due in eleven days.”
“How much?”
“Fifty two thousand.”
“And if he doesn’t pay?”
“Potential liens, collection action, maybe payment plan.”
Not instant collapse.
Then truck lender.
Three vehicles subject to repossession after default cure period.
Franklin’s business was close to breaking.
He needed the refinance.
My body was inconvenient.
My refusal dangerous.
Then the forged hospital discharge.
Ruiz’s investigators traced printer ink and document metadata? Since physical form maybe from Franklin’s laptop via search history.
A warrant later recovered his laptop.
Searches from hospital Wi-Fi:
St Vincent AMA discharge form PDF.
Can adult patient leave after appendix surgery.
medical clearance work after appendectomy.
employer return to work form.
Then a downloaded old form.
Edited.
My signature image inserted from employee tax documents.
The timestamp he typed manually.
He backdated it to before surgery because he wanted it to look like I had wanted to leave all along.
Why carry it in his jacket?
He planned to show it to someone.
Who?
Bank lender.
Warehouse HR.
Maybe hospital.
Then another file on his laptop:
RETURN TO WORK ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
Ethan Walker agrees he is medically able to resume light duty Monday.
Signature blank.
He intended to get it at hospital.
Then:
MEMBER CONSENT.
Mercer Walker Logistics refinance.
Signature blank.
Then:
PERSONAL GUARANTEE RATIFICATION.
Blank.
Three signatures.
He needed me to sign.
If I refused?
There were copied versions prepared too.
But the bank wanted live identity verification.
So I had to physically appear.
Or at least be available on video.
Then Franklin’s messages to Dana while I was in surgery.
FRANKLIN:
HE NEEDS TO BE OUT BY SUNDAY.
Dana:
The surgeon says no.
FRANKLIN:
THEY ALWAYS SAY NO.
Dana:
He almost died.
Franklin:
IF HE MISSES MONDAY WE LOSE EVERYTHING.
There.
Dana had seen it.
I looked at her when Ruiz showed me.
“You knew Monday mattered.”
“I knew business meeting mattered.”
“Did you ask why?”
“He said a lender needed payroll verification.”
“Did he say I was co owner?”
“No.”
“Did he ask you to help get me out?”
Her eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
“What did you say?”
“No.”
That mattered.
Then another text:
Dana:
I am not taking Ethan out against medical advice.
Franklin:
THEN I WILL.
She had resisted there.
Too late for other things.
Still.
Then a new discovery.
Franklin had emailed a branch manager at Hoosier Commercial Bank:
Ethan is young and gets nervous around paperwork. I will answer most questions for him.
The manager replied:
Ethan must answer independently.
Good.
Then:
Please ensure he brings government ID and is prepared to confirm his ownership and guarantee.
Franklin responded:
Understood.
He planned to put me in a room at nineteen, weak after surgery, with documents I had never seen, and make me confirm a business I did not know existed.
The forged discharge was not about a hospital bill.
It was about making me physically available for financial fraud.
Then Naomi said:
“There’s still something I don’t understand.”
“What?”
“Franklin could have tried this without marrying Dana.”
Martin looked at her.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Dana controlled the trust before Ethan turned eighteen.”
Naomi nodded slowly.
“So to get the one dollar lease, the trust records, signature samples, and beneficiary documents, he needed access to Dana first.”
The room went quiet.
I looked at my mother.
She went pale.
