Chapter 24 - Monday MorningThree years after hospital, I drove past the old warehouse on a Monday morning.

New sign:

Heartland Food Distribution.

Clean trucks.

Different workers.

No Mercer.

I almost kept driving.

Then stopped.

The new owner allowed me inside after I introduced myself.

I was not an owner anymore.

Just former trust beneficiary seller.

The old break room painted.

Franklin’s office gone.

Wall removed.

My father’s loading dock still there.

Improved.

Safe.

I stood where I fractured my wrist.

Nothing dramatic.

Just concrete.

Then I drove to Ivy Tech.

I had finished automotive program and was completing small business certificate.

Part time job at independent garage became full time lead technician.

Owner, Kevin, planned retirement eventually.

He offered me option to buy twenty percent over time.

I laughed when he first said it.

“Why?”

“Paperwork.”

He handed me full financial statements.

“Take them to a lawyer.”

That one sentence almost made me emotional.

No family pressure.

No hidden signature.

No “trust me.”

Independent counsel.

I reviewed for three months.

Then said yes.

My investment:

$45,000 from trust distribution.

Not a million.

Not collateralizing everything.

Twenty percent real equity.

No personal guarantee beyond limited amount.

I understood every page.

Then Dana.

She moved closer.

Not with me.

Her own apartment.

She remarried? Maybe no need. Keep simple. She dated? Not needed.

She volunteered at hospital family support group for financial abuse? Could be, but might be too tidy. Maybe she attended counseling and worked.

We had dinner every Sunday.

Sometimes skipped.

Healthy.

Then Carla.

I returned to St. Vincent with thank-you card.

She barely remembered details among hundreds of patients.

That humbled me.

My life changing moment was one shift in hers.

I told her:

“You caught his wrist.”

She said:

“I did my job.”

Exactly.

Then Officer Ruiz joined for coffee? Maybe no.

I sent her letter of thanks.

She replied:

Tell the truth early. It gets heavier the longer you carry it.

I kept that.

Then Franklin approaching release? Four years prison plus maybe now 3 years, could be close. He had maybe one year left. Need final ch25 closure with release and boundaries maybe 5 years after event.

Let's set Chapter 25 five years later after he has completed sentence and supervision. Need no open.

Before then, one final legal matter.

Franklin’s restitution balance after assets:

$61,000.

He could not pay all before release.

Civil judgment remained.

I did not forgive debt.

Payment plan.

Then Dana asked:

“If he contacts me after release?”

“What will you do?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then decide before he does.”

She did.

No contact.

Not because I told.

Her choice.

She changed phone.

Address private.

Then Franklin sent final permitted pre release letter.

I did not open.

Not yet.

May you like

I put it in drawer.

My life no longer depended on knowing what he wanted to say.
