Chapter 15 - The Property at 8120 HardingI visited the warehouse six weeks after surgery.

Doctor finally cleared light activity.

Not work.

Just walking.

Martin came.

Priya.

A property manager.

Dana stayed home because I asked.

Mercer Freight still operated under temporary lease supervision.

Franklin was barred from premises pending business restructuring because company board? He owned it. How can barred? As part of bail no contact with Ethan, but Ethan visiting could coordinate. Better he had stepped back from operations due lender. Peter Sloan serving interim manager under creditor agreement. Fine.

The building looked different.

Same gray exterior.

Loading bays.

Forklifts.

Break room where Franklin once screamed because I sat five minutes too long.

But now Martin handed me property documents.

“My father owned this.”

“Sixty percent interest, yes.”

I touched brick wall.

That did not create a magical connection.

It was still a warehouse.

Then Marcus came outside.

“You look better.”

“Feel awful.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

Then serious.

“I’m sorry I didn’t say anything.”

“About Franklin?”

“Yeah.”

“You worked for him.”

“So did you.”

Fair.

He told me Franklin treated me worse than other workers when no customers watched.

Why?

“Because you were family.”

Not better.

Worse.

He expected more hours.

No overtime complaints.

No injuries.

No resistance.

Then Peter Sloan showed company books.

If Mercer Freight paid market rent and normal payroll, business was not viable in current form.

Could restructure smaller.

Maybe move.

The one dollar lease hid failure.

I asked:

“What happens to employees?”

“If company relocates or closes, some lose jobs.”

Guilt arrived.

Then Martin said:

“Not your responsibility to subsidize a private company with a million dollar asset.”

I knew.

Still felt.

We considered options.

Market lease with staged rent.

Sell building.

New tenant.

Let Mercer Freight buy at fair market through legitimate financing.

No decision yet.

Then I entered office that had belonged to my father.

Franklin used it.

Desk.

Safe.

Family photo of him and Dana.

No picture of me.

Interesting.

Police had searched.

Returned some items.

One remaining filing cabinet belonged to trust property and could be inventoried.

Inside:

Old building plans.

My father’s maintenance logs.

Then a folder:

M. WALKER.

Michael.

Franklin had kept my father’s files at his desk.

Why?

Lease knowledge.

Signature samples.

Trust contacts.

Then one note in Franklin’s handwriting:

Michael structure:

Dana trustee

Shaw co trustee

Ethan beneficiary

Control @21

Need adult consent after 18

He knew exact trust structure long before he told us he was “confused.”

Then:

Best path = voluntary contribution before control date.

That was intent.

Then lower on page:

If Ethan refuses, family debt leverage.

My throat tightened.

Family debt.

The fake $43,100 support bill.

He had planned to convince me I owed enough that giving property into company was repayment.

Then one more line:

Dana will fold before Ethan does.

I stared.

He knew my mother too.

Used both of us differently.

Then Peter called from front office.

A representative from Hoosier Commercial Bank had arrived unexpectedly.

Vanessa Cole.

The lender who wanted Monday meeting.

She asked to speak with me privately.

We sat inside conference room.

She slid a sealed packet across table.

“Our fraud team released this to your counsel.”

Inside was video call recording.

Not me.

A young man wearing glasses.

Claiming:

“My name is Ethan Walker.”

May you like

I stared.

Franklin had already tried to impersonate me before the hospital.
