Chapter 18 - Ella’s Questions

Ella was twenty one when she asked for full legal story.

Not video.

Documents.

Wyatt agreed with therapist.

She read indictment.

Plea.

Trial summary.

Governance.

She noticed something.

“Dad, you got reprimanded.”

Wyatt laughed.

“That’s your takeaway?”

“You didn’t tell.”

“I told conflict broadly.”

“Why?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

She stared.

“Again?”

He smiled.

“Yes. Again.”

Then he explained $750,000 loan.

Board conflict.

Delay.

Ella said:

“So if you had told board earlier, maybe Sabrina couldn’t threaten?”

“Maybe.”

“Does that make you responsible?”

“No.”

“Why tell?”

“Because being victim doesn’t erase my mistakes.”

Good.

Then she asked me:

“Grandpa, why didn’t you just give Wyatt control after?”

“Because he was injured?”

“Yes.”

“That would be pity governance.”

She laughed.

Then:

“Could Sabrina ever have gotten company?”

“No.”

“Even if papers signed?”

“Some personal shares could be affected if legally valid, but founder trust no.”

“So whole plan stupid.”

“Criminal plans often.”

Then Caroline Foundation.

“Could she steal eighteen million?”

“No easily. Multiple trustees.”

“Then why try?”

“Because she thought relationship meant authority.”

Ella nodded.

Then:

“Do I have authority?”

“Over what?”

“Family trust.”

“Some rights as beneficiary. Not blank.”

“Can partner?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“Why good?”

“Because I don’t want anyone marrying me for company.”

Wyatt stiffened.

I saw.

Ella noticed.

“Dad.”

“Sorry.”

She put hand.

“I know.”

Trauma can echo.

Then Ella introduced serious partner, Mateo Ruiz, marine researcher.

Wyatt was polite.

No investigation beyond normal.

Later he admitted:

“I wanted background check.”

“Did?”

“No.”

Progress.

Ella told Mateo family wealth before engagement.

Independent counsel.

Prenup.

No secrecy.

Wyatt stayed out.

When she married, he walked her halfway then stopped at aisle.

She said:

“Why?”

“You walk yourself.”

She laughed.

“Dad, this isn’t feminist performance.”

“Fine.”

He walked full.

At reception, no Heartland speech.

Ella danced.

No dynasty.

Then she and Mateo talked children.

Wyatt nervous.

Not about trust.

About being grandfather.

He called me.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“I’m going to be grandpa.”

“Congratulations.”

“What do I do?”

“Annoy them.”

“Easy.”

Then:

“Do I open account?”

“Ask.”

He laughed.

He asked.

Ella said yes to modest education contribution with transparency.

No secret millions.

Good.

Then Wyatt told:

“Mom and I are proof family money needs labels.”

Ella:

“You and Sabrina?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

No hiding names now.

Then Sabrina remained outside family.

She did not ask meet.

That restraint mattered.
