Chapter 10 - Piper Under Oath
Piper entered court without the woman I remembered.
No Caroline coat.
No diamonds.
Gray suit.
Hair pulled back.
She swore.
Monica began gently.
“Mrs. Palmer, when did you first see Wyatt restrained?”
“Christmas morning.”
“Where?”
“His basement.”
“Was he free to leave?”
“No.”
“Did he ask you for help?”
Piper cried.
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“Call my dad.”
I looked at Wyatt.
His jaw tightened.
“What did you do?”
“I left.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid.”
“Of Wyatt?”
“No.”
“Of whom?”
“Irving. Sabrina. And what would happen if police saw our business records.”
Then invoices.
She admitted.
False descriptions.
Inflated services.
She had signed.
Why?
“Irving said Palmer would recover next quarter.”
Did she know Heartland overcharged?
“Yes.”
Did she benefit?
“Yes.”
Then knee.
“Were you present during injury?”
“No.”
“When did you see after?”
“That evening.”
“What did you observe?”
“His knee was badly injured. He was in pain.”
“Did you call ambulance?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Irving said we would all go to prison.”
Chance two.
Then fatal plan.
December twenty ninth.
Piper testified Irving said:
“We can’t release him like this.”
Sabrina:
“What are we supposed to do?”
Irving:
“Make it look like an overdose.”
Piper:
“No.”
Then she said Sabrina initially cried and said:
“You’re insane.”
Sabrina’s lawyer leaned forward.
Important.
But then Piper continued.
“About two hours later Sabrina asked how they would make it believable.”
Court quiet.
“What changed?”
“I don’t know.”
Then:
“Did Sabrina understand Wyatt was expected to die?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She asked Irving whether the drugs would actually stop his breathing.”
No details.
Irving said enough.
Piper told:
“I will not help kill him.”
Text corroborated.
Then why attend party?
Piper closed eyes.
“I kept telling myself they would stop.”
“Did they?”
“No.”
“Did you call?”
“No.”
Chance three.
Then Caroline coat.
Piper wept.
“Sabrina handed it to me and told me to take it from house.”
“Why?”
“She said police would eventually search Wyatt’s things after he died.”
I felt nausea.
“Why wear?”
“I thought carrying expensive coat out would look strange.”
“So you wore a dead woman’s coat while her son was chained downstairs?”
Objection perhaps argumentative.
Judge allowed maybe rephrase.
Piper whispered:
“Yes.”
Then evidence bag.
She admitted removing trash.
She knew.
Then cross.
Sabrina’s attorney:
“You received reduced sentence recommendation?”
“Yes.”
“You want save yourself?”
“Yes.”
“Did Sabrina initially oppose killing?”
“Yes.”
“Was she afraid of Irving?”
“Yes.”
“Did Irving dominate family?”
“Yes.”
“Did he threaten Sabrina?”
“He threatened everyone financially and verbally.”
“Did he strike her?”
“Not that I saw.”
Then:
“Could Sabrina believe he was bluffing?”
Piper looked at daughter.
“No.”
Irving’s attorney:
“You hate husband?”
“I loved him.”
“Still?”
“I don’t know.”
“You lied for years.”
“Yes.”
“You committed fraud.”
“Yes.”
“You are criminal.”
“Yes.”
She did not fight labels.
That made her dangerous witness.
Then Wyatt testified.
Cane.
Eight months after.
He described captivity.
The chain.
Knee.
Drugs.
Papers.
He did not dramatize.
Sabrina’s defense attacked his own misconduct.
“You hid a $750,000 personal loan from Heartland board.”
“Yes.”
“You approved a lease involving lender.”
“Yes.”
“You violated policy.”
“Yes.”
“You were reprimanded.”
“Yes.”
“Were you worried career would end?”
“Yes.”
“Did you threaten Sabrina with divorce?”
“After audit, yes.”
“Did you tell her she’d get nothing?”
“I told her our prenup governed.”
“You controlled wealth.”
“I controlled my separate assets. We shared marital account.”
Then:
“You kicked Irving.”
“While chained.”
Video.
Then:
“Sabrina cried after your knee was injured.”
“Yes.”
“So she was horrified.”
“Yes.”
“Does that mean she wanted you hurt?”
Wyatt looked at Sabrina.
“She shortened the chain.”
Silence.
Then Irving’s defense.
“Could your memory be affected by drugs?”
“Yes.”
“Then how know?”
“Video. Messages. I remember parts.”
Reasonable.
Then Monica redirect.
“Mr. Yates, what did Sabrina possess after injury?”
“A phone.”
“Could she leave?”
“Yes.”
“Could she call 911?”
“Yes.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
“Could she unlock chain?”
“She had keys.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
Done.
Then my testimony.
Short.
Call.
Text.
Utility entry.
Live stream.
What I saw.
Sabrina’s lawyer:
“You physically attacked Irving.”
“I intervened when he approached my chained son with syringe.”
“You tackled.”
“Yes.”
“You shoved Sabrina.”
“Away from Wyatt.”
“You were angry.”
“Yes.”
“Could anger affect memory?”
“Yes.”
“So recording matters.”
“Yes.”
Good.
No pretending.
Then the live stream played.
Sabrina’s voice.
Irving.
Wyatt screaming.
Me emerging.
Police.
No one in courtroom spoke afterward.
Trial still had digital experts.
Financial records.
Medical testimony.
But human core was already there.
