Chapter 23 - Michael Apologizes Without Asking

At my eighty-third birthday, Michael stood after dinner.
I became nervous.
No dramatic speech please.
He kept short.
“Mom, I spent years thinking apology was a down payment on forgiveness.”
I watched.
“It isn’t.”
Good.
“I forged your signature.”
Silence.
“I used Anna’s property.”
“Yes.”
“I shoved you.”
“Yes.”
“I lied to Rachel.”
“Yes.”
“I taught Ethan that family money was entitlement.”
Ethan looked down.
“And I blamed Dad’s expectations for choices I made as an adult.”
There.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
No question.
No “do you forgive.”
He sat.
That apology landed.
