At twenty-five, Ethan asked me:
“Would Dad have stolen if you hadn’t promised him everything?”
I answered:
“I never promised everything.”
“Grandpa did.”
He had heard phrases.
One day this company is yours.
One day house is yours.
I sighed.
“Your grandfather spoke carelessly.”
“Dad believed him.”
“Yes.”
“So whose fault?”
He wanted percentage.
“No percentage.”
“That’s annoying.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Adults create expectations. Adults still choose behavior.”
He nodded.
“Do you think Dad is bad?”
“No.”
“Do you think he did bad things?”
“Yes.”
“Why is that easier for you?”
“It took years.”
