Chapter 24 - The Platform at Sunset

When Lily turned twelve, we returned to Azure Pearl again.

This time she asked to attend a wedding.

Not ours.

A stranger’s.

Daniel arranged seats far back.

The bride did not know our history.

Good.

Lily wore yellow.

Not white.

We sat near aisle.

The platform glowed at sunset.

New railing almost invisible against water.

A flower girl dropped petals too early.

Guests laughed gently.

The child laughed too.

Lily watched.

Then whispered:

“That’s how it’s supposed to be.”

“Yes.”

During reception, a waiter spilled champagne.

The bride jumped.

Then laughed.

Lily looked at me.

I knew what she was thinking.

After dinner, we walked along dock.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Why did you pay for Aunt Emily’s wedding?”

“I thought it would make everyone happy.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

“Was that dumb?”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“Would you do it again?”

“No.”

“Because money?”

“Because I don’t want to buy peace anymore.”

She nodded.

“What do you buy?”

“Apparently overpriced hotel renovations.”

She groaned.

Then became serious.

“Did you ever wish Aunt Emily went to prison?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t she?”

“Because law wasn’t built around what I wished.”

“Are you mad?”

“Sometimes.”

“Do you think what happened was enough?”

I thought.

“No consequence feels equal to being afraid for you.”

“Then what?”

“I stopped measuring.”

She looked at water.

“Good.”

That was the final lesson before closure.

Justice had happened.

Not perfectly.

Safety restored.

Money recovered where appropriate.

No contact forced.

Relationships rebuilt only by consent.

The island no longer belonged emotionally to the worst day that happened there.
