Chapter 14 - Ryan Walks Away

Ryan sold the ring.
Technically, Emily returned it after lawyers clarified ownership.
He sold it months later.
Donated part of proceeds to a children’s emergency care fund.
Kept rest.
Nobody needed symbolism from me.
He moved back to Richmond.
Returned to work.
We stayed in occasional contact because legal proceedings required.
Then less.
Emily tried twice to restart relationship.
Ryan declined.
Not because I told him.
He told me:
“The push ended it. The lying after made sure.”
“What lying?”
“She wanted me to say Lily slipped.”
“Yes.”
“She also told my parents you funded wedding because you were obsessed with me.”
I stared.
“That’s new.”
“I corrected them.”
“Thank you.”
“No one believed her.”
Good.
Emily had begun turning me into romantic rival because financial explanation alone was not enough.
That rumor died quickly.
Ryan and I were never anything but family by engagement and later witnesses to the same disaster.
He began dating someone else two years later.
I was glad.
End.
Emily’s life became quieter.
Her design consulting job put her on leave during criminal proceedings because public video caused client issues.
She later returned under a different employer.
No total ruin.
Consequences.
Not annihilation.
She underwent anger management and therapy as part of her plea/sentence conditions.
At first, she described it as “court nonsense.”
Later, through counsel, she sent a second apology.
This one shorter.
I pushed Lily because I was angry about a dress. Nothing Lily did justified it. I lied afterward because I was afraid of losing Ryan and being prosecuted. I am sorry.
I showed Dr. Feld.
“Give to Lily?”
“Not yet unless Lily asks.”
She did not.
So we filed it.
One year later, Lily asked:
“Did Aunt Emily ever say sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Was it real?”
“I don’t know.”
“What did she say?”
We read the short version together.
Lily said:
“That one’s better.”
“Yes.”
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
She didn’t.

That was healing.
Not reconciliation.
