Chapter 18 - Emily Learns the Real Price

Emily did not understand the wedding cost until civil disclosure during her abandoned claim.
Her attorney showed her the resort accounting.
$1,995,312.
She called me through Katherine.
“Can I speak?”
Katherine asked me.
I agreed once.
Emily’s first words:
“You really paid all of it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I told you.”
“No, you didn’t.”
Because I loved you sounded too simple.
But true.
“Because you were my sister and you wanted that wedding.”
She started crying.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted it to be a gift.”
“I spent the whole week…”
“Yes.”
“Mom called you poor.”
“Yes.”
“Dad…”
“He knew.”
She stopped.
“What?”
There.
Emily had not known Dad knew.
I told her about September research.
Silence.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“And let Mom…”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he wanted money after wedding.”
Emily laughed.
Then cried.
“Everything in this family is disgusting.”
I did not absolve her.
“You pushed Lily.”
“I know.”
“Do not use Dad to escape that.”
“I’m not.”
Good.
Then she said:
“I thought Ryan’s family paid because Mom kept saying they did. I knew you got us discounts. I didn’t know…”
“Money would not have changed what you did.”
“I know.”
“Would it?”
Silence.
That answer mattered.
If she had known I owned resort, would she have treated Lily differently?
Probably.
That was not comforting.
Respect based on power is not respect.
Emily whispered:
“I think I would have been afraid of you.”
“Exactly.”
She understood.
For first time.
“I don’t want Lily afraid of me.”
“She is.”
Emily cried harder.
“What can I do?”
“Nothing right now.”
“I need to apologize.”
“You already did.”
“She didn’t answer.”
“She doesn’t owe you one.”
Silence.
Then:
“Okay.”
That one word was more meaningful than tears.
No demand.
Later, Emily sold several luxury items and donated equivalent to Lily’s medical expenses to a child injury charity without using Lily’s name.
I did not learn until much later.
May you like
Good.
If she had told me, it would have felt like purchase.
