Chapter 9 - My Father
Charles looked exactly the same in jail interview room.
That offended me.
I expected evil to alter face.
It doesn’t.
Gray hair.
Blue eyes.
Expensive posture.
Orange uniform changed context, not man.
My lawyer and his lawyer were present.
Morgan observed.
Charles asked for meeting.
I almost refused.
Then went because I wanted one answer.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“I was trying to preserve family.”
I laughed.
“No.”
“Daniel…”
“Try again.”
“The trust was going to freeze.”
“So?”
“Your grandfather designed provisions without understanding consequences.”
“He understood you.”
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“I made a bad investment.”
“You stole?”
“It was approved loan.”
“Then why hide review?”
“Because market turned.”
“So Emma had to die on paper.”
He looked down.
“I thought for six months.”
“What?”
“We would fix loan, restore position, then reveal medical error.”
My stomach turned.
“Reveal her?”
“Yes.”
“When she was six months?”
“That was plan.”
“What happened?”
“Claire panicked.”
I stared.
“You’re blaming her?”
“No.”
“You are.”
He leaned forward.
“She said Daniel would never forgive us. She said keep arrangement.”
“Did you disagree?”
“At first.”
“Then you paid Martha for seven years.”
Silence.
“You forged death records.”
“I did not forge physician signature.”
“Who did?”
He looked toward lawyer.
Counsel said:
“My client will not answer beyond plea discussions.”
There.
Someone else created signature.
But Charles authorized filing.
Robert had said Claire didn’t do it alone.
Now maybe third participant.
I felt anger rise.
“Who copied Dr. Marsh?”
No answer.
Charles said:
“Daniel, Emma was cared for.”
I stood.
“Do not say that like it helps.”
“She was loved.”
“By the woman you paid to hide her.”
“Daniel.”
“You let me bury an empty urn.”
His face finally broke.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“What?”
“You don’t get that word until you stop defending.”
I walked out.
Later Morgan told me:
Charles had begun cooperation negotiations.
He identified Elaine Mercer, former Carter Family Office records administrator.
Elaine had created delayed death filing using copied physician signature at Charles’s direction.
She believed? According to her, Charles told her hospital had lost paperwork and asked to reconstruct from provided data.
Did she know Emma alive?
Evidence suggested no.
She copied signature improperly.
Possible false record offense.
But not conspiracy to hide child necessarily.
Again, layers.
Charles authorized fraud.
Claire signed false affidavit.
Elaine fabricated paperwork.
Martha hid child knowingly later.
Each role different.
Then Charles made another claim.
Claire had originally proposed reporting death.
Not him.
Could be self serving.
We needed evidence.
Martha’s drive contained a voice recording from seven years earlier.
Why recorded?
Martha said she started recording once nervous.
File date two months after birth.
Claire:
“We can’t tell Daniel now.”
Charles:
“I told you this needed to be temporary.”
Claire:
“He’ll take Ethan and Emma and I’ll lose everything.”
Charles:
“Then let me fix trust first.”
Claire:
“How long?”
Charles:
“Six months.”
Claire:
“And if you can’t?”
Silence.
Then Claire:
“Then Emma stays with Martha.”

Claire chose continuation early.
