Chapter 5 - The Note Through the Vent

Ethan and Emma saw each other at the hospital on Friday.

Supervised.

Dr. Morrison.

Child life specialist.

Detective not present.

No questions.

Just two children.

Emma sat on bed with coloring pencils.

Ethan entered holding a stuffed fox.

“I brought you Finn.”

Emma stared.

“That’s yours.”

“I have other stuff.”

She took fox.

“Thanks.”

Then they sat.

Awkward.

For thirty seconds.

Then Ethan said:

“You really do look like me.”

Emma replied:

“You look like me.”

They laughed.

I almost broke.

Emma glanced at me repeatedly.

Not sure what to call me.

I did not force.

At one point she whispered:

“Daniel?”

“Yes?”

“Can I say Dad?”

My throat closed.

“If you want.”

“Okay.”

She returned to coloring.

No dramatic embrace.

That was better.

Real.

The forensic interview happened later that day.

Emma described life with Martha as quiet but not cruel.

A cottage.

Garden.

Home tutor named Miss Reynolds.

Television.

Books.

Occasional visits from Claire.

She believed Daniel knew she existed until age five, when Martha told her otherwise.

“Mom said Dad couldn’t know because he would take Ethan away.”

That was Claire’s explanation.

Emma had never met Ethan until hidden room.

After Martha’s stroke, Claire brought Emma to our house at night.

She told Emma:

“You stay here until Grandma’s paperwork is finished.”

Grandma?

Emma used “Grandma” for Claire? No. She had no grandmother in prompt. She might refer to Grandpa Charles. Let's keep "Grandpa's paperwork." Emma knew Charles as Grandpa. Good.

She said:

“You stay here until Grandpa’s paperwork is finished.”

That implicated Charles again.

Food was delivered by Claire.

A tablet with offline games.

No internet.

Books.

Emma could hear household through vents.

On second night she heard Ethan singing the lullaby.

She whispered back.

That began contact.

Ethan found vent loose and passed notes.

One note asked:

WHAT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY?

Same.

Another:

WHO IS YOUR DAD?

Emma:

DANIEL CARTER BUT MOM SAYS HE CAN'T KNOW.

Ethan kept them.

Then Claire discovered one.

She panicked.

Locked hidden latch.

Told Emma:

“If Daniel finds you, everything will be destroyed.”

Emma began crying louder deliberately.

She wanted found.

That detail made me proud and devastated.

She chose noise.

The note Ethan eventually handed me contained the trust amendment because Emma had found it in Claire’s plastic document box.

Why was it there?

Claire had brought paperwork into room when moving Emma.

Maybe she believed sealed room safer than study.

Emma had no idea what paper meant.

She put it inside note because:

“Mom got really scared when I touched it.”

Good instinct.

Robert examined amendment more carefully.

Original signature was Samuel Carter.

Valid.

It required independent child advocate if more than one surviving child in Daniel’s line.

Attached to the copy was a handwritten memorandum.

Charles Carter’s handwriting.

If second beneficiary recognized, freeze all family adviser distributions pending equalization and audit.

Date seven years earlier.

Three weeks after twins’ birth.

My father had written that.

He knew exactly what Emma’s survival would trigger.

Then another line:

C. says medical placement can remain private until restructure.

C.

Claire?

Charles himself?

Robert said:

“Could be Claire.”

Morgan said:

“Or someone else.”

No assumptions.

But motive sharpened.

Trust records showed Charles had recommended millions in distributions over seven years.

Some legitimate:

Ethan’s school.

Medical.

Security.

Household support.

Others:

Carter Family Holdings loans.

A family real estate project.

Management fees.

If Emma had been recognized, independent adviser would have reviewed all.

My father had benefited from the concealment.

Then Morgan received financial alert.

Charles’s passport had been scanned at Dulles Airport Thursday night.

Flight to Zurich.

He did not board.

Security cameras showed him leaving terminal before gate.

A diversion.

His car was found at airport parking.

No Charles.

He wanted us to think he fled.

Why?

Morgan said:

“Because he needed time somewhere closer.”

Closer to what?

Robert answered:

May you like

“The family office.”

Its records.
