Chapter 21 - Claire’s Letters

Claire wrote every month from prison.

Ethan read most.

Emma read none until age eleven.

The letters changed.

Early:

I’m sorry.

I miss you.

I hope one day you forgive me.

Later, after therapists apparently worked with her:

I will not ask you to forgive me.

I will answer any question truthfully if you ever choose to ask.

I knew you were alive. I chose not to tell Dad. That was wrong.

I knew you were afraid in the utility room. I locked the door anyway. That was wrong.

No excuses.

Emma read three.

Then:

“She finally stopped saying she was scared.”

“Yes.”

“She was scared though.”

“Yes.”

“Why can’t she say it?”

“She can. But fear doesn’t need to be used as defense.”

Emma thought.

“I was scared too.”

Exactly.

Claire completed prison education, therapy, and parenting courses.

Good.

Not proof of entitlement to children.

When release date approached years later, family court reviewed.

Emma was fourteen.

Ethan fourteen.

Old enough for views significant.

Ethan wanted supervised meeting.

Emma did not.

Court respected.

Claire received supervised contact with Ethan initially.

No contact with Emma unless Emma requested.

She lived in separate apartment.

No access to our home.

No trust role.

No parental decision authority immediately.

Over time, Ethan formed limited relationship.

Emma eventually agreed to exchange email through therapist at fifteen.

Not meeting.

That was her pace.

I did not sabotage.

Also did not push.

Claire never returned as my wife.

Divorce finalized during incarceration.

No romantic ambiguity.

Marriage ended.

Co-parenting, where possible later, became separate question.
