Chapter 24 - Every File Is Closed

By the time Nora turned forty, there were no open cases.

Child welfare case closed decades earlier.

The finding remained that Claire failed to obtain timely appropriate care and pressured Nora to give false history.

No safety concern in my home.

Nora’s fracture healed completely.

No growth plate damage.

No chronic weakness.

No hidden surgery.

The criminal case closed.

Claire served sentence.

Completed supervision.

Paid restitution.

No appeal.

No pardon.

No new offense.

The financial cases closed.

Frontier released me.

Equipment lender released me.

Lease released.

My credit corrected.

No collection.

No hidden guarantee.

Aurelia sold and rebranded.

The original business eventually dissolved into successor company.

Employees moved on.

No secret victims.

The civil claim closed.

Nora received settlement.

Managed.

Used responsibly.

No remaining insurer dispute.

The divorce closed.

House mine.

Claire equity paid.

No alimony.

No property fight.

Milo long gone.

No shared assets.

The original form shredded.

The electronic copies existed in court archive, not our home.

The clinic video archived.

We did not watch.

No need.

Then I retired.

Commercial construction had taken enough knees.

Laura and I moved to smaller house.

Nora’s kids filled it weekends.

Anna, now twelve, rolled eyes exactly like Nora.

Jack could eat a pantry empty.

My mother Linda died peacefully at eighty eight.

No family feud.

Nora stood beside Laura and me.

Then one afternoon Nora found my old digital signature file on backup drive.

DC_Sign_Final.png.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You still have this?”

I laughed.

Then deleted.

Not because file dangerous itself.

Because I no longer needed.

Modern systems had authenticated signatures properly.

No shared images.

No casual access.

Small practice changed.

Then Nora said:

“You know what bothered me longest?”

“What?”

“Claire saying I was dramatic.”

I waited.

“Not job thing?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I believed it.”

She looked at wrist.

“I thought maybe pain was me being weak.”

“You were fractured.”

“I know now.”

Then:

“I don’t think I want Anna learning pain is character.”

“No.”

“Also don't want her thinking every pain emergency.”

“Both.”

She nodded.

“Annoying.”

Truth often.

Then she said:

“I think this is closed.”

“What?”

“Claire.”

I understood.

No grave visit.

No ritual.

May you like

No last apology.

Closed because nothing remained that required action.
