Chapter 17 - Claire’s Last Letter To Me

After Susan died, Claire wrote me.

Not through lawyer.

Nora was adult.

There were no restrictions.

Subject:

No reply required.

I almost deleted.

Then read.

David,

I used your trust as a substitute for permission.

That sentence stopped me.

I told myself marriage meant I could handle things because you hated paperwork and because I believed Aurelia would succeed before any guarantee mattered.

Then:

That was dishonest.

I did not believe you had actually agreed to those debts.

Specific.

Then Nora.

Her accident was not my fault.

What I did after was.

Then:

I knew Kelsey wanted imaging.

I knew Nora wanted you.

I knew insurance did not necessarily mean immediate closure.

I told her the worst possible outcome because I wanted compliance.

Then:

When you came in, I was more angry that my schedule had been interrupted than afraid she might have a fracture.

That matched video.

Then:

I am sorry.

No demand.

No “but.”

Then:

I will not contact you again unless there is a practical reason involving Nora, and now that she is adult, that reason should go through her.

I responded:

I believe you.

Then:

I accept the apology. I do not need further contact.

She replied:

Understood.

That was last direct conversation between us.

Years passed.

Claire did not offend again, at least none known through public records or family.

She worked.

Retired.

Moved near Washington coast.

She did not rebuild Aurelia.

No redemption brand.

No podcast.

No memoir about being misunderstood.

I appreciated that more than I expected.

Then Nora asked:

“Do you forgive her?”

“I don’t think about that much.”

“Really?”

“Not daily.”

She smiled.

“That counts.”

Maybe.

Then:

“I think I forgive some.”

“Which?”

“She didn’t make me fall.”

I laughed.

“That wasn't hers.”

“I know.”

Then:

“I forgive her for being scared.”

“Not lying?”

“No.”

May you like

“Fair.”

Forgiveness does not need whole package.
