Chapter 19 - The Original Form Comes Back

I thought the Aurelia form was gone.

Then Hannah Cole retired.

She sent a box of old client property.

Divorce.

Bank releases.

Credit letters.

Court copies.

Inside clear sleeve:

Original registration form.

I stared.

Home fall.

8:40.

Father witness.

Printed signature.

I called Nora.

She was thirty four.

“Want this?”

She came.

Looked.

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“It looks pathetic.”

“One sheet.”

She read.

Then signature.

“You still sign like that?”

“Unfortunately.”

She laughed.

Then:

“I remember saying keep it.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know why?”

“No.”

“Because Claire wanted it back.”

Smart.

“I thought anything she wanted back that badly had to matter.”

Then:

“I didn’t know about signature.”

“Neither did I.”

She tore page.

I flinched.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

She tore again.

Then stopped.

“Do you need it?”

“No. Official records exist.”

She put into shredder.

The machine swallowed.

No ceremony.

Then Nora said:

“That form didn’t make truth.”

“What?”

“I knew where I fell before anybody saw video.”

I looked.

“Proof is for people who weren’t there.”

Yes.

Then:

“You believe before proof?”

I thought.

“I believed enough to leave clinic.”

“After I said?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

Not everything needed perfect.

Then we ate sandwiches.

May you like

The original physical object was gone.

No one needed frame.
