Chapter 12 - Diane’s Recording

Diane recorded Evelyn because she did not trust anyone.
That was almost funny.
The call happened ten days before the playroom attack.
Diane:
There’s nothing wrong with Claire.
Evelyn:
Then why has Ethan been complaining for months?
Diane:
Married people complain. She’s pregnant, not crazy.
Silence.
Evelyn:
You were hired to observe risk.
Diane:
I’m telling you there isn’t one.
Evelyn:
There only needs to be enough concern to pause one meeting.
Diane:
You want me to lie.
Evelyn:
I want you to document what everyone else is too sentimental to admit.
Diane:
That’s a lie with nicer words.
Evelyn’s voice hardened.
EVELYN:
Then earn what you’re being paid.
There.
No explicit command to assault.
No child harm.
But knowledge that legitimate instability did not exist.
Then Diane:
What if Child Protection closes it?
Evelyn:
Then we use private evaluation.
Diane:
And if that clears her?
Evelyn:
By then Friday is over.
Forty eight hours.
That was the purpose.
Then Eric joined another call.
He suggested:
Sleep deprivation.
Stress observations.
Medication concerns.
Evelyn said:
“No planted drugs.”
Eric:
Of course.
Yet Diane planted pills anyway.
Did Eric know?
Texts suggested yes after fact.
He wrote:
Get bottle out after assessment.
He became more active.
Evelyn could argue he exceeded instruction.
True.
Still conspiracy to manipulate capacity existed.
Then Ethan heard recording.
He looked sick.
“She used me.”
“Yes.”
“I used you too.”
I looked at him.
He continued:
“I told everyone you were being irrational because you disagreed with me.”
That was one of the most important admissions.
Not because wives never act irrationally.
Because he substituted relationship judgment for business argument.
Then:
“When Diane said you screamed, I believed her because I was angry you wouldn’t vote my way.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
I believed he was sorry.
Still did not trust him.
Then police asked whether I wanted protective order against Ethan.
No evidence he posed physical threat.
I declined beyond existing temporary boundaries.
Against Evelyn?
Yes.
Against Eric and Diane?
Yes.
Then Evelyn was arrested on charges related to conspiracy, attempted fraudulent interference with business governance, false reporting conspiracy, maybe witness tampering? Need generic.
She surrendered.
No dramatic handcuffs at gala.
Attorney office.
Eric arrested separately.
Both posted bond under restrictions.
No contact.
Then Bennett Medical shareholders voted.
Evelyn permanently removed as chair.
Could she keep board seat?
No.
Independent committee recommended removal.
Shareholder vote passed.
Her 8% shares remained.
Economic ownership is not office.
She still wealthy.
But no authority.
Then her success fee agreement voided.
Crescent Harbor deal dead.
E.B. Advisory froze.
Corporate civil claims prepared.
Then my father’s old letters.
Because Evelyn’s misconduct triggered review of Bennett Family Trust archives.
One letter from Dad to Evelyn ten years earlier:
You are brilliant at deals and terrible at accepting when someone else has the final vote.
My hands shook.
He knew her too.
Another:
If Claire ever takes my seat, disagree with her as a director, not as her aunt.
Exactly what she failed to do.
Then I wondered:
Why had Dad made me controlling shareholder at twenty eight?
Maybe too much.
Maybe he trusted me.
Maybe both.
No parent gets governance perfect.
Then one document:
Emergency proxy provision.
Dad had written it.
And added handwritten note:
This should never be used to overcome Claire’s judgment simply because others believe they know better.
Evelyn had read it.
May you like
Her initials on review.
She knew exactly what she was twisting.
