Chapter 10 - Forty Eight Hours

Forty eight hours.
That phrase explained the whole architecture.
Nobody needed to permanently institutionalize me.
Nobody needed to take Noah forever.
Nobody needed to prove I was mentally ill beyond doubt.
They needed delay.
A board vote.
Temporary authority.
Confusion.
Ethan’s power of attorney required two physicians to certify incapacity.
Hard.
But company bylaws contained separate emergency voting rule.
If controlling shareholder was hospitalized or under active protective investigation and could not attend, existing financial proxy could vote on ordinary transactions unless trust protector objected.
I had forgotten.
So had Ethan.
Evelyn had not.
My father had written emergency rule after his own heart surgery.
He trusted family to act reasonably for a few days.
That was the crack.
If CPS created an emergency, Diane appeared injured, I was hospitalized after “violent episode,” and a private evaluator recommended observation?
Evelyn could argue I was unavailable.
Ethan’s proxy could vote.
Would Ethan agree?
He supported Crescent Harbor.
Yes.
He did not need to know case manufactured.
That was elegant.
Terrible.
Then trust protector.
Who could stop?
Rebecca.
My attorney.
Evelyn knew.
So she also needed Rebecca delayed.
How?
An ethics complaint had been prepared accusing Rebecca of conflict because she represented both me and family trust in past matters.
Filed draft.
Not submitted yet.
Another forty eight hour obstacle.
Then board counsel.
Evelyn had scheduled emergency legal review for Friday morning.
Everything ready.
I stared at timeline.
“This was a coup.”
Rebecca corrected:
“A temporary governance manipulation.”
“Sounds less dramatic.”
“It is more accurate.”
Then Ethan.
He had to answer his own role.
He supported sale.
He gave Eric detailed information.
He failed to revoke security access.
He repeated Diane’s claims about me to Evelyn.
He bought burner phone for Eric.
But did he know reports were fabricated?
No evidence.
Did he know Evelyn’s side fee?
No.
Did he know capacity timeline?
No.
Did he want my vote overridden?
He admitted:
“I told Eric I wished someone could make Claire step away for one meeting.”
My heart cracked.
“Exact words?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
Three weeks before first report.
During argument about Crescent Harbor.
Eric responded:
“Maybe she needs to be forced to rest.”
Ethan laughed.
Did not object.
Then later when reports began, Ethan should have questioned.
Instead he thought:
Maybe Eric was right.
Maybe pregnancy stress made me unreasonable.
He did not fabricate.
He consumed fabricated narrative because it aligned with what he wanted.
That was betrayal enough.
Then police found one email from Ethan to Evelyn.
SUBJECT: FRIDAY.
Claire will never vote yes while she thinks the valuation is wrong. If she misses the meeting, I can use proxy if counsel confirms. I hate saying this, but maybe one day without her in the room is what the company needs.
He stared when Rebecca showed me.
“I wrote that.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t mean…”
“Stop.”
He stopped.
I continued.
“You wanted my absence.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t plan how.”
“No.”
“You let other people solve it.”
“Yes.”
And now a nanny had scraped my pregnant belly.
That causal line would matter in marriage even if not criminal.
Then board committee hired independent valuation.
New estimate for western division:
$128 million.
Crescent Harbor offer:
$84 million.
Difference:
$44 million.
Evelyn’s $11 million personal upside sat inside a transaction costing company potential tens of millions.
Motive clear.
Then federal contract announcement leaked? No illegal. Publicly expected soon. Three weeks later actual award could increase value further.
Evelyn needed before news.
Then Eric’s compensation.
Family Assessment Solutions would receive:
$1.2 million “post-transaction family governance engagement.”
Funded by E.B. Advisory.
His motive too.
Not about brotherly concern.
Money.
Then Rachel called.
CPS formally closed neglect allegations against me as unfounded.
Not simply unsubstantiated.
Evidence showed reports intentionally misleading.

My name cleared.
But the criminal investigation had only reached halfway.
