Chapter 21 - Eric’s Sons

Carter and Mason carried guilt that never belonged to them.
When Carter was twenty-two, he told Noah:
“Dad did it because of us.”
Noah:
“No. Dad did it because of Dad.”
Good.
“But money.”
“You didn't ask.”
Then Carter:
“I used trust for college.”
“So did I.”
“Feels weird.”
“Grandpa wanted.”

Then Mason:
“I almost told bank trustee to give mine to you.”
Noah laughed.
“That would be stupid.”
“Why?”
“Because then Grandma's whole competition works.”
Yes.
They kept shares.
No moral redistribution.
Then cousins grew closer.
Not best friends.
Holiday group chat.
Games.
Noah’s adoption became fact, not subject.
Then Eric watched sons relate to Noah and realized imagined competition had never mattered to them.
He told me:
“I was protecting people who didn't ask.”
“Yes.”
“I think I needed excuse.”
“Yes.”

“Do you regret prison?”
Odd.
“I regret actions.”
Good.

“Prison?”
“It forced stop. But I don’t romanticize.”
Good.
He had seen consequences, not redemption machine.
Then his business recovered slowly.
He sold company at fifty-eight.
Paid debts.
Retired moderately comfortable.
No hidden riches.
Then Jennifer divorced him? Could add but not necessary. They stayed married through hardship. Fine.
Then Lily married Adam Cole, a UX researcher. Noah best man? Could be sibling role. At wedding, Margaret present, Eric present. No drama.
Lily's speech:
“Noah, you taught me being sister is mostly stealing chargers.”

No trauma-centered.
Then Noah later married Emily Park? All white Americans. Use Claire Morgan, product engineer. He told adoption story early.
No secret.
Margaret attended at eighty-six.

Then great-grandchildren.
Margaret held baby only after asking.
No family entitlement.
Then one Christmas, a toddler spilled lemonade.
Everyone froze because old story? That was soda? Here lemonade picnic.
Margaret herself reached for napkins.
