Chapter 16 - Eric Comes Back

Eric completed custody and supervision.
Forty-five.
His business survived but smaller.
Jennifer had kept accounts clean with partner.
He could return to work subject legal/insurance constraints.
No public leadership for some contracts.
He sold one investment property to repay Dad’s loan and fees.
Not ruined.
Then he requested meeting with me.
I waited a year.
Dad alive.
No urgency.
At mediation center:
“Marissa.”
“Eric.”
He looked tired.
“I’m sorry.”
“Specific.”
He nodded.
“For social-services report.”
Then:
“I knew some claims came from Mom and were exaggerated.”
“Which?”
“Lily doing childcare. You leaving Noah alone.”
“Why send?”
“I wanted adoption delayed.”
“Why?”
He swallowed.
“Money was part.”
“Part?”
“I thought you were taking on child because divorce left you lonely.”
“You weren't therapist.”
“I know.”
Then:
“I also thought Dad would start treating him equal.”
“He did.”
“Yes.”
“That made you angry.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I told myself I was protecting my boys.”
From losing $50k hypothetical.
He nodded.
Then Dad’s illness.
“I handled more than you knew.”
“I know now.”
“I got resentful.”
“Then ask Dad to compensate.”
“He had.”
“Yes.”
“I wanted inheritance to reflect.”
“Did Dad say?”
“Not clearly.”
There.
“So you helped create clarity.”
“Yes.”
Then loan.
“I believed he would say yes.”
“Maybe.”
“But you didn't get independent approval.”
“No.”
Then:
“Why remove bank trustee?”
“Because I thought bank would undo changes.”
That was damning and honest.
Then:
“Did you know Dad thought Noah was still foster child at lawyer?”
“I heard him say it.”
“Did you correct?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if I corrected, amendment might stop.”
Silence.
There was core.
Then:
“Do you love Dad?”
“Yes.”
“Noah?”
He struggled.
“I care.”
Not enough.
Then:
“Do you regret?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Do you expect family back?”
“No.”
Good.
I said:
“I forgive you.”
He started crying.
“But not because sentence done.”
He nodded.
“I do not trust you with Dad’s money.”
“Understood.”
“You will not be trustee.”
“I know.”
“You will not discuss inheritance with Lily or Noah.”
“I won’t.”
“And Noah decides whether you're uncle in his life.”
“Yes.”
Then he asked:
“Can I write?”
I asked Noah later.
“No.”
I told Eric.
He accepted.
Years later answer changes.
Then Jennifer and I rebuilt some relationship.
Our kids cousins.
Carter and Mason apologized to Noah for awkward distance though not their fault.
Noah:
“You didn’t do anything.”
Good.
At thirteen, Noah agreed family picnic with Eric present.
Public park.
No Margaret? She separately.
Eric did not force.
Talked baseball.
Noah hated baseball.
Awkward.
Then dinosaurs.
Eric had learned.
Progress.
No instant bond.
Then Lily graduated college.
Eric invited?
She chose yes to ceremony but no family dinner? Maybe.
He attended back row.
No drama.
After:
“Proud.”
Lily:
“Thanks.”
May you like
That was all.
Family repair can be two words.
