Chapter 20 - Margaret’s Apology to Me

I forgave Margaret before I trusted her.
Trust took twelve years.
At eighty, she asked me to help pack downsizing.
I went.
Noah adult.
Lily adult.
Old papers.
Photos.
Then she found adoption finalization picture.
Me.
Lily.
Noah at courthouse.
Dad smiling.
Margaret absent.
She had refused to attend.
She stared.
“I told everyone I had dentist.”
“I remember.”
“I sat in car parking lot.”
“What?”
“I drove there.”
My chest tightened.
“I couldn’t go inside.”
“Why?”
“If I saw judge make him yours, I’d have to stop thinking I could undo.”
There.
“You were outside?”
“Yes.”
“Why never tell?”
“Shame.”
She cried.
“I watched you come out. Robert lifted Noah. Lily was jumping.”
I remembered.
Then:
“I wanted to walk over.”
“Why didn't?”
“Pride.”
Simple.
Then she said:
“I wasted years.”
Yes.
Then:
“Do you forgive?”
“I have.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Do you trust?”
“Some.”
That was new.
“Enough for what?”
“Enough to pack boxes alone with you.”
She laughed.
Then I asked:
“Why did you say Noah ruined every gathering?”
“Because I was watching him for proof.”
“What?”
“That adoption had been mistake.”
So every quietness:
Evidence.
Every overwhelm:
Evidence.
Every spilled drink:
Evidence.
Confirmation bias.
Then:
“And when he behaved perfectly?”
“I called him manipulative.”
No way to win.
Then:
“You understand now?”
“Yes.”
She sat.
“Marissa, I am sorry I made your child audition for family.”
That sentence broke me.
Because that was exactly.
Noah had spent years apologizing for existing.
I hugged her.
First in a long time.
Not because all healed.
Because I wanted.
Then we kept packing.
Found old trust copy.
She started to tear? No. She handed.
“Keep or shred?”
“Estate closed. Shred.”
We shredded duplicate.
Official records remain.
No family museum.
Then she found Eric’s old fax cover sheet? Could be evidence of adoption report. No need.
Then:
“I wish I could undo report.”
“You can’t.”
“I know.”
“Then do not ask Noah to make you feel better.”
“I won’t.”
She kept.
Then Margaret moved.
Smaller condo.
No guest rooms for everyone.
She became guest at family events.
That demotion, once her nightmare, became relief.
She no longer had to host.
No longer controlled.
