Chapter 23 - Emily Becomes the One Who Chooses

At twenty-one, Emily received full educational access to her trust and partial advisory rights.
She did something nobody expected.
She invested a small portion in a nonprofit housing fund.
Margaret questioned returns.
Emily said:
“Good thing it’s not your money.”
Margaret nearly smiled.
Then:
“Your father would—”
She stopped.
Emily raised eyebrow.
Margaret corrected:
“I would prefer a higher return.”
Progress in real time.
Emily also asked Rachel to attend college graduation.
Me too.
Thomas.
Margaret.
Carol.
We all sat in same row.
No one died.
Rachel cried hardest.
Margaret brought binoculars because seats were far away.
Carol approved because optics vaguely resembled birdwatching.
After ceremony Emily hugged me first.
I noticed.
Then hated myself for noticing.
Parenthood’s ego never fully dies.
She hugged Rachel.
Margaret.
Thomas.
Everyone.
Love was not pie.
Margaret had spent decades believing another bond reduced hers.
It did not.
Fear did.
Control did.
At dinner Emily made a toast.
“Thanks for finally becoming less weird.”
We deserved it.
Then she said:
“When I was six, I thought family was whoever got mad when I used the wrong word.”
My throat tightened.
“Now I think family is whoever lets you choose the words.”
Margaret cried.
I did too.
Thomas whispered:
“David.”
I nudged him.
May you like
“No dead-man verdicts.”
He smiled.
