Chapter 21 - The Name Foster

At eighteen, Emily graduated high school.

College forms asked legal name.

Emily Rose Foster.

She came into kitchen.

“Do I keep Foster?”

I nearly dropped mug.

“Why wouldn’t you?”

“Because family name is complicated.”

Yes.

“Do you want mine?”

“It is mine.”

Right.

Adoption had not changed surname because I took Foster when marrying David.

She was Foster regardless.

Margaret learned question existed.

Old Margaret would campaign.

New Margaret said:

“It is your name if you want it. Not mine to assign.”

Emily chose Foster.

Not for company.

Not for Margaret.

For David.

For Thomas.

For herself.

She later joked:

“And because changing documents sounds terrible.”

Valid.

She attended college out of state.

Margaret cried.

Did not ask her to stay.

That may have been her greatest act of love.

I cried too.

Asked fourteen safety questions.

Emily said:

“Mom.”

I stopped at eleven.

Recovering.

Thomas retired fully.

Carol got him into birdwatching.

Betrayal.

Rachel visited Emily independently once.

Sent me photo only after asking.

Boundaries matured.

Foster Holdings no longer controlled our calendar.

Emily’s trust sat outside.

Boring.

Growing.

Martin began teaching her investments.

She did not buy horse.

She bought used Honda.

Victory.

Then Margaret asked me to lunch alone.

We had never done that.

She brought the original navy dress from dinner.

Folded in bag.

“What is that?”

“The dress.”

I knew.

“Why?”

“I kept it.”

“For evidence of your villain era?”

She gave me look.

“I was thinking of donating it.”

“Okay.”

“Then I thought maybe I should burn it.”

“Dramatic.”

“Yes.”

“What do you want from me?”

She smiled.

“Permission not to make it symbolic.”

That surprised me.

“Donate it.”

We did.

Simple.

No fire.

No ritual.

May you like

An object stopped carrying meaning.

Freedom can be boring.
