Chapter 22 - Thomas Tells Me Why He Stayed
Thomas developed heart problems at seventy-six.
Nothing immediately terminal.
Enough to make conversations direct.
One afternoon he said:
“You always wondered why I stayed with Margaret so long.”
“I thought I knew.”
“You knew part.”
We sat on porch.
He continued.
“When David was ten, Margaret saved the company.”
I looked at him.
“How?”
“My father made a terrible investment. We were near collapse. Margaret found accounting inconsistencies and forced him to sell a division before debt swallowed everything.”
I had never heard.
“She was brilliant.”
“Yes.”
“Still is.”
“Yes.”
“She became controlling after saving everyone?”
“Partly.”
Thomas looked toward yard.
“People praised her for seeing danger before anyone else. She learned that fear plus control could equal survival.”
There it was.
Origin.
Not excuse.
Pattern.
“When Michael died and shares shifted, she saw another lesson: if you do not control structure, loss controls you.”
I nodded.
“And you?”
“I loved that she made chaos feel manageable.”
Of course.
Thomas benefited.
David too, maybe.
Family wealth.
Stability.
Then strength hardened into domination.
“Why didn’t you stop her?”
“Because for years her control helped me.”
Honest.
“Then when it hurt people, I still remembered the years it saved us.”
That mattered.
Families preserve harmful dynamics because they were once useful.
A grandmother’s control may have saved company.
Later nearly cost granddaughter.
Thomas whispered:
“I made her into the bad one because divorce was easier if I forgot why I loved her.”
I understood.
Human complexity again.
“Do you regret divorcing?”
“No.”
“Regret staying?”
“Also no.”
“Convenient.”
He laughed.
“I regret not changing sooner.”
That was fair.
Then he asked:
“Do you think David would be proud?”
Dangerous question.
“I think David would be annoyed we’re asking a dead man for a verdict.”
Thomas laughed until he coughed.
