Chapter 16 - The Move

At sixteen, Sophie was offered spot in arts program in Charlotte.

Not me.

Her.

Life has humor.

She burst into kitchen:

“Mom.”

“What?”

“Guess.”

When she told, I stared.

Charlotte.

The city Evelyn had once treated as kidnapping.

Sophie laughed.

“Grandma is going to combust.”

Then stopped.

“Sorry.”

“No. Funny.”

Program was summer, six weeks.

Not move.

We told Daniel.

He cheered.

Then Sophie asked:

“Do I tell Grandma?”

“You decide.”

She had seen Evelyn four times over past year, always public/mediated at first, then one lunch with Daniel present.

No unsupervised.

Probation ended.

Family court no-contact order had expired/been modified as Sophie matured, but parents retained control.

Sophie texted via supervised family account:

I got into Charlotte program.

Evelyn replied:

Congratulations. I hope you love it.

Nothing else.

No:

You’re leaving me.

No guilt.

Sophie stared.

“She didn’t.”

“No.”

Then:

“Maybe prison worked.”

I said:

“Consequences, therapy, time, and choices. We don’t know which.”

She shrugged.

Then summer.

Sophie went.

I panicked.

Daniel laughed.

“Now who can’t let go?”

“Shut up.”

Healthy mirror.

I did not follow.

She stayed dorm with supervision.

Called sometimes.

Not every night.

Then returned taller somehow.

“Charlotte’s cool.”

I groaned.

She laughed.

Then college later became question.

She wanted UNC School of the Arts? Maybe photography? She had become interested in visual storytelling partly Ben, but don't force trauma career. Let's choose set design/visual arts. Fine.

Then family dynamics.

Daniel dated Maya Roberts, a school librarian.

He introduced after year.

Sophie liked.

I felt weird.

Normal.

I dated Andrew Lane, civil engineer.

No melodrama.

We remained co-parent.

Then Evelyn.

She requested no more legal contact.

She lived quietly.

Volunteer at community garden, not child center due past? After probation, maybe no legal restriction, but she chose adult garden.

She attended family funeral one year.

Sophie saw.

Evelyn asked:

“Can I hug?”

Sophie:

“Not today.”

Evelyn:

“Okay.”

I watched.

That one okay carried more weight than apology.

Then Ben photographed funeral? no.

At Sophie seventeenth birthday, she asked for family photos at park.

“Ben?”

“Yes.”

I called.

He said:

“Only if Sophie wants.”

She did.

Then question:

“Grandma?”

Sophie paused.

“No.”

No guilt.

Evelyn was not invited.

She learned through Daniel? No need.

No drama.

Then photo day.

Sophie wore sunglasses because sunny.

At one point Ben said:

“Take them off?”

She laughed.

“No. They look good.”

Everyone laughed.

The same object category no longer belonged to concealment.

Then Ben showed screen.

Sophie healthy.

Daniel.

Me.

Not married, standing on either side.

No Evelyn.

A chosen family configuration for that day.

Then Sophie said:

“One more with just me.”

We stepped away.

She stood alone.

Camera clicked.

That became my favorite.

May you like

Not because independent from family.

Because she was not hidden behind anyone.
